A Local Hero!
Did you know know a North Shields boy sailor helped the boffins at Bletchley Park decipher the EnIgma Code.
Thomas Brown may not have the recognition of Alan Turing or his colleagues. However Brown was one of three heroes who played their part in Hitler's downfall.
Brown was a NAAFI assistant on HMS Petard.Aged15/16 Brown was one of boarding party sent to U-559 off Port Said. Along with Lt Fasson and Able Seaman Grazier they descended into the U-Boat and rifled the boat for documents etc. They found two code books which Brown brought back to the surface via the conning tower of the sinking U-Boat. After three trips bringing up logs and code books Brown shouted to his comrades to abandon ship. Sadly Fasson and Grazier went down with the U Boat. Brown was dragged down but managed to resurface and was picked up by the waiting launch. Fasson and Grazier were awarded the George Cross while Brown received the George Medal. Along with the Polish capture of one of the Enigma machines the actions of Brown and his crew mates helped shorten the war.
Sadly Brown was killed in another heroic action in 1945 when he attempted to save his younger sister from a house fire. He was buried in Tynemouth cemetery with full military honours.

Sadly next Saturdays tour I have had to cancel. I have been pinged by the Covid app this evening and had to make the difficult decision to follow the Govt guidelines to cancel it for the safety of all those involved. Starting up a business is not easy and this is a another setback. However the lovely ladies who booked the tour were very understanding and have pencilled in another date later this year.
There is another Newcastle tour on Saturday 31st July at 10 or 1pm. The 10am is based around Quayside and the 1pm tour incorporates the medieval town walls and Keep. Get in touch if you fancy a wander.

The Lifeboat was 1st conceived and built in South Shields in 1789. It was tested on the Tyne in 1790. A North East 1st many people might not be aware of.
William Wouldhave entered a competition to design a boat to save lives at sea. He is credited as the inventor the the lifeboat but he actually came 2nd behind Henry Greathead. The clocktower recognises the contribution both made to safety at sea and saving many lives since 1790.
The original lifeboat was called The Original( they obviously put a lot of thought into the name). The boat shown is the Tyne Lifeboat ,its the 2nd oldest lifeboat still in existence. Built in1833, it help rescue over 1000 lives during its working life. It was restored to its former glory and unveiled in 2013.
For Those in Peril on the Sea.

NHT can offer you tours around South Shields taking in some of its rich maritime history. Message us if you are interested.
