Huge thanks to & for their recent impactful work in Ouseburn's woodland 🌳

With guidance from Cain at Wild Intrigue, staff from One Utility Bill did some tactical bramble pruning with the aim of exposing an area of the woodland floor, usually dominated by overgrowth, in turn encouraging new seeds to take hold & leading to better biodiversity. This is a technique that mirrors regenerative farming practices, where cattle may be encouraged to graze areas in a planned rotation to encourage new growth & land recovery.

Thank you to One Utility Bill for joining our business partnership programme. This is their first volunteering session with us, with three more to come! Learn more about business partnerships: ouseburntrust.org.uk/get-involved/business-partnerships

One of our volunteers completed sampling and testing of river water in the Ouseburn yesterday as it exits the culvert into the Lower Ouseburn Valley, as part of Earthwatch's - a biannual campaign to test the quality of local freshwater including rivers, streams and lakes. This helps to build a national picture of water quality across the UK.

Today we're very excited to welcome Archeological Research Services to the Victoria Tunnel. Their team will be carrying out a preliminary investigation to locate potential subterranean rail tracks in our subterranean Grade II Listed structure.
Should they discover something, they will also support a potential scheme of excavation to expose historic rail tracks.

These tracks would've been used during the Tunnel's waggonway era, helping transport coal from Spital Tongue's Colliery to the River Tyne.

We'll keep you posted on the results!

Thank you to the Pilgrim Trust for funding this project.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for this year's events!

Alongside our regular day of Victoria Tunnel taster tours & a special performance on Ballast Hills, we hosted an event with a local young artist, Amy Jowett.

People joined us on both Saturday & Sunday for a walk through Ouseburn Valley, exploring the four themes of art, politics, cinemas & Byker with an Ouseburn Trust guide, whilst Amy helped them print their own unique tea towel using a set of handmade stamps which Amy created. Everyone's tea towel was totally unique 🔍

Alongside this we finished the afternoons off with a drop-in Zine workshop, inviting people to use images from our archive to create their own piece.

Thanks for a lovely !

Over the next few weeks we’ll be beginning to help increase the biodiversity of Lower Ouseburn by diversifying scrub patches, with the help of Wild Intrigue .

Scrub is an incredible, important habitat - it creates a nursery for trees, supports breeding birds like Long-tailed T**s, Blackcaps and Song Thrushes, whilst providing wild areas for Hedgehogs and a huge diversity of insects.

Historically, large herbivores like aurochs, bison and boar would have browsed and trampled scrub patches, creating dense patches for nesting birds, open grassland for flowers, and a whole host of microclimates - providing the perfect habitat for many of our wild neighbours.

With Ouseburn Trust and Wild Intrigue, volunteers will be replicating the actions of these larger herbivores to provide more habitat for the Ouseburn’s wildlife.

- Autumn is the perfect time for scrub management as the breeding birds have finished nesting, and hedgehogs have larger young and haven’t started their winter hibernation.
- Small areas of brambles will be removed to increase the ‘edge’ of the scrub patches.
- Hand tools will be used so we can mimic the actions of large herbivores.
- Wildlife surveys will continue to monitor the area to record any change in species present.

Jen & Steve first met nine years ago as Victoria Tunnel guides – they were always a big hit with the visitors, but also clearly with each other, & we’re very happy to share that at the end of August they got married, returning to where it all started for some photos for the album!

Now a big part of our Environment Volunteer Team, they are a witty, creative & supportive couple, and we wish them all the very best for their future together.

The Westcott-Wonders said ‘Thank you so much to the Ouseburn Trust for letting us have some truly unique wedding photos, where it all began! Everyone had a blast coming down underground in their finery - a proper Ouseburn affair!

Enjoy your honeymoon, guys!

We had a great day practicing our scything this week with John Grundy of Wilderness Tamed. We're going to manage some of our grassed areas differently over the next 12 months, cutting less often and seeing which wildflowers appear and which pollinators are attracted as a result. We found our first Bee Orchid in the Valley this year!

This work is part of the 'Newcastle's Nature Networks' project, a partnership with Urban Green Newcastle , Northumberland Wildlife Trust, the Natural History Society of Northumbria, Northumbria University, Newcastle City Council, Scotswood Community Garden, Ouseburn Farm and Ouseburn Trust.

Activities are supported by our brilliant volunteers and the project is funded by the Government's Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.
