Corncrake, Thorpe Marshes, 20 May 2020

Corncrake calling this morning at NWT Thorpe Marshes, Norwich. I was alerted by my neighbour who heard it yesterday evening. Birds have been released at Pensthorpe, near Fakenham, Norfolk, so it could be a bird from there.

Annual visit today to the splendid end of the pier Christmas show at Cromer, Norfolk, starring my old friend Olly Day, and a chance to enjoy turnstones on the pier.

A good year for the Rhodope lily: Honeyguide's group in Bulgaria in late June enjoyed a fine show of the threatened Rhodope lily (Lilium rhodopaeum) at our regular site. With 84 plants, 56 of them in flower, that's the best for several years, with none of last year's problems of plants being dug up. Some on-site management by Vlado Trifonov, Honeyguide leader and Lilium expert, seems to have helped - that was to counter undergrazing. Perhaps weather was a factor. Some plants were setting seed, too, which happens all too rarely. Monitoring and management of the Rhodope lily continues to be funded by money raised by our holiday. Photos by Tim Strudwick.
