The Christmas season is fast approaching and the switch on of The Mousehole Lights is always a popular and spectacular occasion that never fails to get everybody into the Christmas spirit. It’s a fantastic time to visit Cornwall and to finish off your Christmas preparations in a relaxed and traditional way.
The 2017 ‘switch-on’ will be held on Saturday 16th December 2017 at 7pm in Mousehole and is a truly beautiful sight. Sea serpents, fishing boats, whales and much more are lit up in the harbour. Indeed the lights surround the entire village and even extend up the hill - almost as if in Hollywood! Lanterns line the streets, some of which are barely wide enough to walk through. The gift shops and galleries are all open late every evening and mulled wine, chestnuts and mince pies are sold on the streets.
Whilst the lights are a celebration of the season there is also a twinge of sadness for the village. On the 19th December the lights are turned off for an hour between 8 and 9pm in memory of the crew of the Solomon Browne, the Penlee lifeboat that was lost with all hands in 1981 whilst attempting to rescue the crew of the Union Star off Lamorna. Nearly all the crew of the lifeboat were from Mousehole including the pub landlord, to whom there is a plaque on the wall of the Ship Inn.
Another event on the Mousehole Christmas calendar is Tom Bawcock's Eve on the 23rd of December. It is said that the residents of the village were starved of fish because of a stormy winter and that eventually fisherman Tom Bawcock set out into the huge waves. Tom returned with 7 types of fish and the village was saved. From then on, in his honour, Starry Gazey pie has been cooked and eaten on the day.
We would love you to come and stay in one of our properties at this special time of year, providing the perfect base to experience the local attractions and events.
