The weather has taken a turn here in Scotland (shock!) but its getting us excited for the autumn colours.

October is a fantastic time to visit Scotland as the trees and hills turn amber. Plus it means cosy nights sipping drams by the fire after a day exploring.

One of our favourite spots in autumn is Highland Perthshire. Only an hour north of Edinburgh, you get to explore castles, beautiful woodland walks and cosy pubs - what’s not to like!?

Where’s your favourite spot in autumn?

Another fun filled whisky tour had with these guys 🥃

After touring with us in 2022, they got in touch to have us create another bespoke whisky trip for them.

We made sure to balance the whisky tours with fun activities, such as quad biking, a boat trip on Loch Ness and of course one of Laura’s famous wilderness picnics at a bothy.

A great few days were had by all and they are already planning their next trip back to Scotland.

Why take the car when you can arrive at your hotel in style?

Recent guests of ours did just that. We collected them from Oban, sailed up the sound, and moored at Port Appin, where our guests were staying from the evening.

A fantastic experience to add to your trip.

Thank you for snaps Stephen and Julie 📸

On this day…
The Glencoe Massacre, also known as the Massacre of Glencoe or the Massacre of MacDonalds, occurred in the early morning of February 13, 1692. It was part of the larger political turmoil following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which saw the overthrow of Catholic King James II and the ascension of Protestant rulers William III and Mary II.

The massacre was rooted in a longstanding feud between the MacDonalds and the Campbells, two powerful clans in the region. It was exacerbated by political factors, as the MacDonalds were seen as Jacobite sympathisers (supporters of the exiled King James II and his descendants), while the Campbells were aligned with the new Protestant government.

The massacre took place after a group of government soldiers, under the command of Captain Robert Campbell of Glenlyon, was billeted with the MacDonalds of Glencoe. Despite the Scottish tradition of hospitality, having welcomed the soldiers and fed and housed them for 2 weeks, the soldiers turned on their hosts, attacking them in the early hours of the morning. The MacDonalds had been lulled into a false sense of security, as they had sworn allegiance to the new monarchs, but their submission had not been properly registered within the required time frame.

Around 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed during the massacre, the first thought to be the clan chief MacIain of Glencoe, with many others fleeing into the mountains, where some died of exposure. The event caused outrage across Scotland and beyond, not only because of the treacherous breach of hospitality but also due to the involvement of the government and its officials.

Despite attempts to cover up the massacre, an official inquiry was eventually launched. While the inquiry found that orders for the massacre had come from the highest levels of government, including Secretary of State for Scotland John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair, no one was held accountable. The Glencoe Massacre remains a dark stain on Scottish history, remembered as a symbol of betrayal and political violence.

Today we visited the memorial to remember this sad episode in Scottish history.
