After 8 days exploring amazing Capadoccia on foot with my good friend Luca Panaro (thank you Luca!), I now have the bones of next year's hiking tour sorted out with my new friend and local guide Faruk. As everyone will probably want to add on different excursions (Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Ephesus, Agean coast, etc), I will concentate the actual hiking tour in Capadoccia for a week or so next April-May, to include a hot air balloon ride! Watch this space as further details develop.

Just beyond that bridge lies The Black Sea - weird to think Ukraine is just a few hundred miles over that water. This is the eastern end of The Bosphorus - quite a day out! Off exploring in Capadoccia at the weekend, after 5 days in Istanbul. What a mind bogglingly huge and incredible city - busy as hell. But it is Ramadan after all 😵‍💫

Last month, I accompanied a group to Tuscia in Italy (the old Etruscan area around Viterbo in Lazio and parts of Tuscany) and we were blessed with perfect weather every single day for two weeks. In fact, even the locals thought it was too hot for October! A wonderful mix of walks around old Via Cava's (Etruscan roads), forests full of ancient Etruscan tombs, Roman and Medieval towns and villages, Jewish Ghettos, Roman Amphitheatres, Palazio's, extinct volcanic calderas, chestnut and hazelnut groves, weird sculpture gardens, a 12th century Benedictine Abbey, beaches, lagoons with pink flamingos - and so much more. And then of course there was the wonderful cuisine... and the wonderful wines! The last photo is of myself with Goffredo and his son Matteo, who many of you will have met over the past 22 years.

Better late than never! In September, Ross and Luca took a group around Iceland and had a wonderful time. But in the current circumstances, I'm glad they did it then. It's quite possible that Keflavik Airport will close if the volcano actually erupts... The last photo is about our first tour next year. Join us?

While Ross is in Iceland with a group, I am on The Isles of Scilly with another group - and in just glorious weather too. Luckily, our visit has corresponded with some extremely low tides and yesterday we all walked between Tresco and Bryher, stopping half way over to enjoy some of the entertainment, bars and local food stalls set up on a large sand bar, normally covered by deep (but sometimes shallow) water! 🙃

Last sunny days in Andalucia - Periana, Alhama de Granada, Competa, Nerja and its stunning caves, The Rio Verde Valley, Frigiliana, Granada and The Alhambra. Relaxing and enjoying the seaside - what a place to have my 75th! Thank you to Nora, Patty, Christine, Lorraine, Jim, Sue, David, Javier Sanchez (local guide extraordinaire!), Edward Crawshaw and Manolo & Anna (El Canuelo) - and Maria Lopez (Hotel Balcon de Competa). It has been stupendous! 😇

Finally, after 4 years planning (thanks Covid) - here we are in Andalucia (in Spain) having a wonderful summery time. A few days have been 30C, but are mostly in the mid to high 20's - perfect for walking and rural themed visits, not to mention historical places such as The Mezquita in Cordoba and The Alhambra in Granada. Next year will start May 4th, so consider joining us to coincide with the wonderful Spring flowering we are now enjoying. Hasta, Martin and Javier.

Sadly, my New Zealand explorations are coming to an end soon and next Friday I fly home. Then I will begin the task of compiling detailed programmes for the two tours next year - a huge job, but I'm sure all will slowly fall into place. I now think they are going to be about a month each, as there is just too much to see and do in only 3 weeks on each island - and after all, it's a long way to go for only a short time! So many people have been extremely kind with their generosity of spirit and help and assistance - you know who you are, so many thanks to you. Here are just a few pics from the last 4 months... Ciao!
