Silver award recognises Locomotion’s support for autistic visitors 🥈

One of the North East’s most popular attractions has been recognised for its positive steps towards enhancing the experience for autistic visitors, staff and volunteers.

Locomotion in Shildon, has been presented with the Silver Autism Acceptance Award by the North East Autism Society 👏🏻

The attraction, which displays highlights from the national collection of railway vehicles, is expected to have more than 200,000 visitors this financial year and is aiming for the gold award by the summer.

The award was presented by Kerrie Highcock, our Family Development Manager, to Pam Porter, Locomotion’s Operations and Events Manager, during World Autism Acceptance Month.

Kerrie said: "A lot of great work had already been carried out at Locomotion before we got involved, and it’s been a pleasure to work with such a great team in building on those foundations.

"All the staff we’ve met have been so invested in wanting to make a difference and to translate the training and guidance into practice."

Happy Valentine’s Day!💞 I figured I’d speak about a topic that we get a lot as a couple where I’m disabled and isn’t. It’s something that often freaks a lot of people out unfortunately 😒.

I frequently get told how amazing owen is for ‘staying with me’ and ‘not leaving me’.

The hero guy for finding it in his heart to stay with the poor disabled girl. His life filled with sacrifice and care for little old me who’s unable to be a what society deems as a fulfilling girlfriend 🤷🏻‍♀️

Whilst there is no doubt that Owen is amazing🥰, that is not due to the fact that I’m disabled.

People forget that I contribute in many ways: I single handedly do the food shop every week, I’m always the designated driver, I’m even sent to the building merchants for DIY materials (bags of concrete) and I don’t think Owen has sorted the boring stuff like insurances or booked holidays in the past 6 years, that’s my job 😂

We’re a team and just because Owen has worky legs, and I have no-worky legs, doesn’t mean we need to be pitied 😅

We are getting married in five months and I can’t wait! 💒 👰🏻🤵‍♂️

WE HAVE SOME AMAZING NEWS TO BRING YOU!

From March onwards Blue Tit Cottage will have the below double profiling bed which also can be separated to become 2 single profiling beds. Both beds will be complete with full length side rails that can be taken on and off.

The second bedroom in Blue Tit cottage will continue to have 2 single electric adjustable beds again which can pushed together to create a double.

Get booking ASAP as we believe bookings are going to come in fast.

We have 2 wonderful and affordable cottages perfect for 2 guests. We are located in a wonderful area to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

From the cottages alone you can walk parts of the Pennine way or down to Bowes village to the the_ancientunicorn or enjoy a more challenging walk up to The Tan Hill Inn. We have boot trays and a shared laundry to be able wash and dry your clothes too.

We often get asked what is a through lift?? This video shows the through lifts in Blue Tit & Kingfisher cottage going from the downstairs area where the bedrooms and bathroom are to the upstairs living, kitchen and dining area. The maximum weight capacity is a generous 255 kg (40st) and the internal lift dimensions are 1200mmx740mm allowing us to take manual and powered wheelchairs. The lift is complete with a drop down seat for users who need support but not needing a wheelchair.

Our son, Andrew instantly fell in love with it and the surrounding area.

We finally moved in on 1st July, 2002. We had always been involved with agriculture on the arable side but going back in time our families have always been livsetock farmers either in Scotland or Devon.

When we arrived here there was an old stone built diary/granary which was derelict and it was our son, who had aways been in a wheelchair, who asked if he could convert this building into holiday cottages. Not just any ordinary holiday cottages. He wanted cottages for both disabled and able bodied people. Somewhere familes and groups could all holiday together. Hence, the birth of Mellwaters Barn Cottages as you see them today.

With our personal experience with dealing with disabilities we take great pleasure in welcoming people who may be in a wheelchair or just less able to walk without help. You can view all of accessibilty features here .We've worked hard to make your stay the best it can possibly can if you or someone holidaying with you is less mobile.
