Recently discovered some wild edible blueberries growing. Can safely say they were delicious! Wild blueberries must protect themselves from the forces of nature to survive, causing them to develop a higher anthocyanin content than ordinary blueberries. That hardiness allows them to create a nutritional kick that will apparently kickstart my brain and make me a genius…watch out! 🫐

‼️If you are in doubt when foraging, please don’t eat it. It’s just a much safer option.

The climate is changing. Over the past few decades Scotland has become warmer with shifting rainfall patterns. In the future the changes we are already experiencing locally and globally are projected to intensify, with more extreme rainfall, associated flooding and more intense and frequent heatwaves.

Over the past few days the estate has had some riverbank protection work done to cope with expected peak river volumes over the coming seasons.

Here’s the river in the height of Summer; shallow, meandering and calm with a towering sculpture taking pride of place on the bank.

The warmth of May has encouraged the cowslips to bloom throughout the estate. These happy little bursts of sunshine show us Summer is on its way.

Legend has it that a woman can attract the man of her dreams if she washes her face with milk infused with flowers of cowslips.

Fancy eloping, but can't decide if its for you?
They may not be for everyone, but here's a few reasons why we love elopements.

What is an elopement? A traditional elopement is often the couple, an officiant and two witnesses, however now it has expanded to include the couple and a few more of their nearest and dearest. While elopements are not as small as they once were they are still usually no more than 20 people. Elopeme...

This weekend the Scottish Borders plays host to a gravel riding festival focussed around the more social, less competitive side of cycling.

The ride will feature some of the most epic trails and roads this part of the world has to offer, with riders passing through Blackhouse Forest Estate.

With both the start and finish lines located this weekend promises to cater to all, not just gravel cyclists! There’s yoga, talks & tales an eclectic mix of live music and family friendly activities within the grounds of Scotland’s oldest inhabited house.

According to folklore, the dew today has magical properties and anyone who washes their face in it will have a flawless complexion for the entire year 💁‍♀️ I think these dew jewels are beautiful to look at sparkling in the sun.

But the real significance of May Day however was rooted in agriculture. Springtime festivities filled with song and dance celebrated the sown fields starting to sprout. Cattle were driven to pasture, special bonfires were lit, and doors of houses as well as livestock were decorated with yellow May flowers 🌼

Happy May Day!

What a beautiful weekend. I chose to spend it in Innerleithen exploring, soaking up the sunshine and local atmosphere. It’s a bustling and welcoming town which lies around 25 mins from Blackhouse Forest Estate.

We started at Leithen water and crossed the Cuddy Brig which was built in 1701 to let parishioners on the east side of the water attend their church.

Walking through Pirn Wood the sun danced through the trees until we came out at Innerleithen Golf Club where we could hear golfers tee off. The trail was around 4-5km and it’s a lovely walk through woodland.

On the way back we had a jaunt through the high street which has a great choice of places to shop for gifts Haus and Co The Flower Bee
and stop for refreshments No1 Peebles Road

Just missed out on a tour of Robert Smail's Printing Works as I had the dog, but I have the tour times now!

I’ve popped a walk map on our story if you fancy an adventure!

Stunning blue sky day at St Mary’s loch 🌞

The loch situated only a short journey from us takes its name from a church dedicated to St Mary which once stood on its northern shore, although only the burial ground is now visible.

Local legend has it that the loch has no bottom, and it is reputed to be the coldest loch in Scotland. If you feel brave enough to take on the legend it’s perfect for a wild swim or trip kayaking. 🚣‍♀️

Always look forward to shopping in Cameron’s bakers to get our most loved guest welcome item, the Selkirk Bannock.

You’ll often meet a local in Cameron’s who will give you a wee song and say their day will get better now they have a chocolate eclair to enjoy. After tasting their baked goods you can see why. So good in fact this bakery has an appreciation society on Facebook!

Allegedly Selkirk Bannocks owe their popularity to a baker named Robert Douglas, who invented and started selling them in the market square at Selkirk in 1859. The Selkirk bannock was even served to Queen Victoria when she visited Abbotsford House (home of Sir Walter Scott) in the summer of 1867, and it has been popular ever since.

So…if it’s good enough for Queen Victoria 👑 😉

Lots going on today, some maintenance work, wedding set up and a viewing with a lovely couple. Sometimes it’s a bit tricky to stop when there’s lots happening, however the car got blocked in so we took the chance to walk a quick loop of the burn and gaze in amazement at the new solar panels sucking up the energy from the sky.

Spring comes to us a little later at Blackhouse Forest Estate. The daffies will be fully out by the end of the month, but you can see the colours of the landscape changing once again to celebrate the coming season.

Welcome to our Teak-i Bar!

As part of our earth friendly ethos we aim to recycle and reuse where possible. These chairs will be ready for the firepit area when they have had another coat of teak oil to keep them looking good.
The perfect place to perch whilst your s’mores get melted.
