Weekday Walkies Prices as of November 2014

1 hour walk - £10
30 minute walk - £6
No charge for initial meeting with dog and owner. About the service
I currently cover the following area's
S20, S12, S2 and S13
All my walks vary according to each dog's needs. I take last minute enquiries and always strive to help my customers in emergencies. Dogs can be walked alone on request for no additional cha

rge otherwise I will walk no more than 3 dogs at one time. It is important for me that the dogs I mix are happy to be together each day, not just tolerating each other. I will walk ‘dog aggressive’ or 're-active' dogs alone by prior arrangement. I am not a behaviourist but I do have experience with aggressive dogs. Please don’t be concerned about the temperament of your dog as regular exercise and mental stimulation can help you move forward with most behavioural issues so a dog walker could be the best way forward for you and your dog. All your needs will be discussed at the initial meeting so that you, me and your dog are satisfied with arrangements. (Some of my customer's are dog trainers and I will be happy to recommend one that should suit your specific dog's requirements)

I do run with some dogs by special request; please ask about this service if you feel your particular dog may benefit from this superb activity. I can track the route and times of individual walks and post online. This has offered peace of mind for owners leaving their dog with a walker for the first time. If I cannot meet your requirements I am happy to provide details of other dog walkers in your area. About me
My name is Gemma and I live in Mosborough with my Dobermann Pinscher. I have experience owning, walking and caring for dogs in my home and homes of others. I have owned and cared for many breeds (Large and small) and temperaments throughout the years on a casual basis and chose to pledge all my time to Weekday Walkies due to it's success. I dedicate my all my time and experience to providing vital exercise for dogs at an affordable price. I also have liability insurance, am CRB checked and can provide references on request.

Yesterday, I received the following email from a researcher for the TV programme *Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly*:

"𝑀𝑦 𝑛𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑠 (redacted) 𝐼 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑉 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤 ‘𝐷𝑜𝑔𝑠 𝐵𝑒ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 (𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑦) 𝐵𝑎𝑑𝑙𝑦’.

My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.

However, I was puzzled. Was the “cravat” unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody – why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.

I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.

Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help – all while filming it for his TV show!

WTF 😳😳😳

I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.

It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.

I then did some open-source research on "The Country’s Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. He’s essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.

According to his website, he charges £875 per session 🤔😧

Now I’m not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if I’m the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.

However, I couldn’t let this pass without making it public knowledge.

If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques he’ll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training you’ll receive is questionable at best.

Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.

TRAINING TIPS TUESDAY!

This week let's talk about repeating cues, or rather NOT repeating cues!

This is one of the most common mistakes owners make when training their dog. You say the cue, the dog either does nothing, or does something else so you say the cue again in the hope that the dog will respond this time. When the second cue doesn't work, you repeat it again, and so on....

But the fact is, the only reason why this would be a good idea is when the dog genuinely has not heard the first cue. Let's face it, this is the least likely reason they did not perform the required behaviour!

It's much more likely that the dog either doesn't fully understand that cue, there is something distracting them in the moment, or there just has not been a good enough history of reinforcement to make it happen in that moment.

However, most of the time, the dog just needs a few seconds to THINK!

Dogs process verbal cues differently to how we do, and they very often just need a few more seconds to process what they've heard and calculate the correct response.

Every time we repeat a cue, the dog has to start that whole thought process again and it takes even longer.

This can easily lead to the dog switching off from the training session because it's naggy and frustrating. If you do it too much, you will also end up with a dog who only ever responds on the third or fourth cue because "why listen first time if I still get reinforced on the third time?!"

So next time your dog doesn't repsond to a known cue immediately, just wait him or her out for 5 seconds, and see what happens. Maybe they will respond once they've had a chance to process! If not, it's time to look at the environment and then go back to the training process and see where the gaps might be!

Was this helpful? Follow the page and share with your dog friends!

It's even suitable for young pups to prepare them for fireworks before they develop a fear!

I'm in the process of creating a webpage for it which will give you more in depth info and the ability to sign up, but for now, keep a look out!

We all know that fireworks aren't just for a day or a weekend anymore.
Around 'Firework Season' consider your walking times carefully.
Try to ensure you walk your dog while it's light, or if you need quieter, antisocial walking times, early morning rather than when it goes dark later. Fireworks are more likely in the evenings after dark.
If your dog needs something to do in the evening, try brain training/scent games inside.

29/10/2021

With Bonfire Night a week away, and Fireworks Season upon us, I'm going to be posting some tips for preparing your dog for fireworks.

First is 'Build a Den'!
Prepare a covered area (it can be a blanket fort or a covered crate) for your dog. Leave it open and leave some of their favourite things in there.
Do this in advance so your dog is used to it when the time comes to use it.
This is your dog's area - and if she heads in there, you leave her to it, don't try to coax her out.

Help your dog this fireworks season with these simple tips 💥✨

1. Walk earlier in the day when it's light
2. Ask your neighbours if they're planning fireworks so you can plan around them
3. Feed a big, early dinner & put the heating on to encourage restful sleep
4. Mask the sight & sound by closing blinds/windows & having the TV/radio on
5. Stay home
6. Build a cosy den in a quiet spot with duvets for soundproofing
7. Give medication if prescribed (speak to your vet well in advance if you feel it may help)
8. Offer comfort & cuddles if your dog asks for them
9. Accompany your dog in the garden (using a lead) if they need a toilet break

Our advice is not to walk your dogs in temperatures over 21 degrees. And as it's now already 20 degrees at 8am, this is your final call for a low energy, quick walk before it gets too hot today. It's likely to become too hot by 9am. Never worry if your dog misses a walk, much safer to stay inside and keep cool then risk them over heating. How about doing some training indoors, some search games, find the sausage etc!

With the hot weekend ahead and many new dog owners unaware of the risks, please share ☀️💧

There are lots of adjustments you should make for your dogs in hot weather...never leave in cars...avoid walking on tarmac or in the heat of the day...
But one that is often unknown is the danger of WATER INTOXICATION
Your dog needs water to keep cool but too much can be dangerous so avoid playing hosepipe games for example

After hearing last week of a suspected attempted dog theft I have written to the Government calling for them to make it easier to serve harsher sentences to those found guilty.

Currently the vast majority of perpetrators will only face a maximum of six months. This needs to change.
