Research Vessel Services

Research Vessel Services Research Vessel Services provides professional marine technician support to ocean and coastal research vessels across the globe.

Our team is made up of highly qualified technicians from the top institutes with over 40 years "at sea" experience spanning 400 global expeditions on both European and US research vessels

Each of our technicians has experience supporting expeditions at all stages of the cruise lifecycle from technical assessment of cruise proposals through to mobilisation, at sea support, demobilisaton, post-crui

se assessment and cruise legacy management

We can also provide additional technical assistance to embedded technicians during vessel dry docking and refit periods All our technicians are qualified operator/maintainers of Kongsberg blue water systems including EM710, EM120 and EM302 multibeam systems. Our team members hold ROV Pilot/Technician, high voltage, post processing and STCW qualifications as-standard.

Its been a few weeks since I have written anything as the team have been busy in dry dock overseeing the overhaul of some pretty cool acoustic systems (EM302, EM710, EA600, EK60, TDI ADCP's). It takes experience and attention to detail to get the best out of these systems - something our team of experienced techs has in abundance! Stay tuned!

Looking a little bare without her masts RRS Discovery, Dundee, UK. The Director of Marine Operations had the opportunity to visit this iconic research vessel last week and see the preservation work that is helping safeguard this historic ship for future generations. It's amazing to think how much has changed since Robert Falcon's Scott's expedition a century ago

The technology in Oceanography has certainly changed a lot in the last twenty years. We have seen amazing breakthroughs and advances in ship systems, sensors, AUV's, UAV's, ROV's and HOV's. Our team has supported expeditions throughout this period and have experience of established oceanographic data collection methods as well as the latest emerging technologies.

A sailor's Discharge Book is a great record of ships and service but nothing is more important than our teams log books and record of competence to show applied science support at sea. Its amazing to think I've now supported 100 expeditions and I look forward to supporting many more in the future!

It's not just scientists who check out the science sensors. An Albatross shows its immense wingspan in comparison with the meteorological sensors on the vessels main mast. As a technician you quickly learn which birds have a tendency to sit on GPS antennas or peck at meteorological sensors.

Research Vessel Services development of ORCA (Ocean Research Collection and Archiving) is meeting very positive reviews. The development of the software is based on the following concept points

COLLECT – The acquisition of data from sensors onboard a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Research Vessel (RV) or similar platform.

CHECK – The automated validation of data from each sensor to ensure that the received sensor values fall within specific parameters and are free from erroneous data.

COMMIT – Recording the sensor data and validation checks to a central data repository

COLLATE – Bringing the individual sensor data together in single dataset and collating individual data files into a data centre ready structure.

COMMENT – Using ORCA’s inbuilt event logging function the users can annotate events and data acquisition to assist with big data handling and third party understanding of the dataset.

COMPOSE – ORCA allows the user to generate custom datasets from acquired sensor data in the form of user configurable file exports, graphs and file downloads.

CIRCULATE – The dataset, files and annotations can be circulated to collaborators and the community via ORCA’s web interface

ORCA (Ocean research Collection and Archiving) and ORCADIA (Ocean Research Collection Archiving Data Interface App) are Research Vessel Services latest software solution. This system has been developed in conjunction with UK Scientists to develop a simplistic user-friendly interface for reviewing, interrogating and exporting ROV/Vessel acquired datasets

Sorry for the lack of updates. Our team is busy working on ORCA (Ocean research Collection & Archiving) system and its big (Scottish) brother ORCADIA. These are web based system designed for the presentation, analysis and distribution of ROV acquired data. We are pleased to announce our first version of this system has now been trialled and received very positive results. More to come!

As the ship pulls away from the quay the technicians are ensuring the systems are all working and getting data. The list is long! EM302, Em710, EK60, USBL, EA600, Seapath 300, POSMV, CNAV, KSYNC, VMM, SBE45, SBE38, Flurometer, Turbidity Sensors, PH Sensors, MetPak Pro's, Seaspy Magnetometer to name just a few and that's before we even begin with the ROV! What would we do without technicians?!!
