Christmas trees are, in a way, a Royal tradition, introduced into England by the Hanoverians in the 18th century. Queen Anne had no children so her second cousin once removed became King George II of England, bringing Christmas traditions and above all that of the Christmas tree with them.

Well worth a look at The American Garden

The 2nd Earl of Carnarvon collected various seeds from America to plant at Highclere and the Azalea took particularly well. In Victorian times, this part of the garden became known as 'The American garden.'

Have you seen the Egyptian Exhibition Highclere Castle ? Great day out.

In our Egyptian Exhibition, we have replicated the North Wall mural from the tomb of Tutankhamun. The section you can see here shows the Boy King being greeted by the goddess, Nut and to the left of that he and his spirit are welcomed by Osiris.

What a view

The view from East Anglia bedroom looks towards both Siddown Hill and Beacon Hill. The 5th Earl allegedly held seances in this room so it seems appropriate that you can almost see his grave on the summit of Beacon Hill.

So much history at Highclere

Today we pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen as she becomes the first British Monarch in history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, an extraordinary life devoted to the service of our nation.

We are delighted to share with you this photo of earlier years when as Princess Elizabeth she attended Highclere Church, with her sister Princess Margaret, Prince Philip as well as the current Earl of Carnarvon's father and grandfather.
