For those of you who make time to enjoy some ‘slow’ tourism, it’s always worth seeking out what’s going on locally during your visit beyond the well known attractions. Venture North often highlights local events on their website. Check it out! https://www.venture-north.co.uk/events?c=&a=1180&from=&to= using ‘Caithness North’ which covers this area 😊

Delighted to meet the lovely 25-year old who’s staying with us before beginning his epic run from John o’Groats to Lands End tomorrow. Hoping to do the 850+ miles by early May 😮. He’s raising money for two incredible mental health charities (Andy’s Man Club and Young Minds). If you see him - give him a wave! 👋 You can follow his challenge on his Instagram and/or donate here https://www.givewheel.com/fundraising/1519/t2bc/ 😀 🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃💕 Best of luck from us Ellis!

Love our big kitchen window 💕. Can you see a theme with our winter posts?!! A by-product of any weather is the fabulous view we get of the Firth - and the ships that have to navigate it in stormy seas 😳 (we’re in the middle of storm Isha today). Below is an interesting read - that’s if you’re interested of course lol ⛴️💨⚓️🌊

“Penthland Firth is the name of the treacherous 12km strait between Caithness and the Orkney Islands. It was - and is - a very dangerous area for shipping because it has one of the most powerful tidal currents in the world. This can create tidal swell waves several metres in height. In the eastern part of the strait, currents up to 16 knots have been measured.
Areas where the current and the tidal swell are particularly pronounced have been given names such as The Merry Men of May and The Swilkie. The latter also sometimes creates a maelstrom or whirlpool. The name Swilkie has Nordic origins meaning something like “the swallower”. According to a legend, said to date back to Viking times and also known from the Younger Edda, the maelstrom is created by a sea witch rotating the quern that grinds salt for the sea – hence the word maelstrom (mael = grind; strom = current). The Swilkie originates from a point on the small island of Stroma, whose name also has Nordic origins: “Strøm Ø” (Current Island). The place names clearly speak of the dangers of the strait!
Right up to the demise of sailing ships, sailing through the Pentland Firth was avoided if possible. The great ocean-going voyages, for example from Denmark and the Netherlands to the Colonies in the West and East Indies, went far out beyond the Orkney Islands. Since 1822 it has been possible to sail through Scotland via the Caledonian Canal, at least with ships of up to 45 m in length.”

Photos after the amazing snow dump video posted earlier in the week! It’s been many, many years since Caithness enjoyed snow days like those we’ve had this week. Our two mile access loop road has been impassable for the last four days and even all roads in and out the county were shut at one point! ❄️

We, as well as our visitors, spend a lot of time watching the passing traffic! 🛳️ The Regal Princess cruise ship is one of the largest we see 😀.
Factoids: 330m long, 44m wide, 66m high, 142,714 tons, 3,560 guests, 1,346 crew, 1,440+ balconies, 1,780 cabins, 19 decks. 😮. These photos give some idea how mahoosive it is compared to the fishing boat. (FYI the heaviest ship we’ve seen is an oil tanker at 154,000 tons!)

Slow-motion for a change! Not especially related to Pods or Pitches but had to share somewhere!
We pulled in at the end of our road to take a phone call and how worthwhile it turned out to be! Not only was the call for a booking, but Mr Wagtail kept fluttering around the car. We finished the call, set the camera to slo-mo and la voila! 🐦 🎥 💕
