A funny for you. New for 2024 season!!!! Flushing toilets in our #NC500 #pods. Our camper toilets have GONE! 🤩🤩. Jo is super happy 🤣🤣🤣
We get a few campervans and motorhomes over the winter but generally it’s quiet on the #NC500. Plenty of time for us to play! ⛄️
The Pentland Firth
Love our big kitchen window 💕. Can you see a theme with our winter posts?!! A by-product of any weather is the fabulous view we get of the Firth - and the ships that have to navigate it in stormy seas 😳 (we’re in the middle of storm Isha today). Below is an interesting read - that’s if you’re interested of course lol ⛴️💨⚓️🌊
“Penthland Firth is the name of the treacherous 12km strait between Caithness and the Orkney Islands. It was - and is - a very dangerous area for shipping because it has one of the most powerful tidal currents in the world. This can create tidal swell waves several metres in height. In the eastern part of the strait, currents up to 16 knots have been measured.
Areas where the current and the tidal swell are particularly pronounced have been given names such as The Merry Men of May and The Swilkie. The latter also sometimes creates a maelstrom or whirlpool. The name Swilkie has Nordic origins meaning something like “the swallower”. According to a legend, said to date back to Viking times and also known from the Younger Edda, the maelstrom is created by a sea witch rotating the quern that grinds salt for the sea – hence the word maelstrom (mael = grind; strom = current). The Swilkie originates from a point on the small island of Stroma, whose name also has Nordic origins: “Strøm Ø” (Current Island). The place names clearly speak of the dangers of the strait!
Right up to the demise of sailing ships, sailing through the Pentland Firth was avoided if possible. The great ocean-going voyages, for example from Denmark and the Netherlands to the Colonies in the West and East Indies, went far out beyond the Orkney Islands. Since 1822 it has been possible to sail through Scotland via the Caledonian Canal, at least with ships of up to 45 m in length.”

Part lll in our Facebook trilogy this week! 48 hours and the snow has almost gone 🤩. It was fun but hopefully the last we’ll see this winter. Meanwhile, Storm Isha’s underway - eek! Stay inside and stay safe 💕
Amazing watching the sky do a snow dump!! ❄️
Coastal walk at John o’Groats
An empty car park, footpath to ourselves…… Caithness in winter - what’s not to like!! 🤩
The calm before the storm…
The calm before the storm? Gorgeous October sunset and clouds this evening 💕
Running errands in Thurso so stopped off to say hello to our local Mrs Coo and then Dunnet Beach on a rather breezy October day. A 15 minute drive from our cozy pods and pitches - we sort the pods - it’s up to you to make your pitch cozy! 💕
Our oldest visitor!
Steve and Beverley stayed with us en route to a vintage rally in Orkney bringing a 1913 Model T Ford - our oldest guest to date!
We weren’t expecting to see blue skies and a sunset to come out of those moody clouds! Happy campers 💕 Venture North VisitScotland #selfcateringaccommodation #timelapse #sunsetvibes #vanlifeuk #seaview #nc500

Wagtail in slow-motion
Slow-motion for a change! Not especially related to Pods or Pitches but had to share somewhere!
We pulled in at the end of our road to take a phone call and how worthwhile it turned out to be! Not only was the call for a booking, but Mr Wagtail kept fluttering around the car. We finished the call, set the camera to slo-mo and la voila! 🐦 🎥 💕
