Reiff Climbing Festival

Reiff Climbing Festival A celebration of climbing on some of the best UK rock. Organised by climbers for climbers!
(4)

This year the festival will be based around camping at Port Beag, Althandhu. There's a pub within 2 minutes walk and Reiff (where all the climbing is) is a 5 minute drive (or half hour walk). There will be workshops available to improve your skills and ropes set up for those who want to give outdoor climbing a try but don't have the right kit yet. This year the festival is being run entirely by vo

lunteers so if you want to get involved please get in touch! Tickets will be on sale soon, and will include camping and a ceilidh on the Saturday night so please save the date for now! The weekend we've chosen is the same weekend as the Coigach half marathon, which will run past the campsite on the saturday, so bring the runners in your life too!

Iain Young and John Higham had a superb day on January 5 making the first ascent of Geologists’ Ridge (IV,4) on the 450m-high south -west face of Conival in the Northern Highlands. Iain and John have a strong track record of seeking out big prominent lines such as Table Rib on Cul Mor and Hindmost...

On the 12th day of Christmas Scottish Geology Trust gave to me… 12 drumlins swarming! 🥁🎶

Drumlins are elongated hills of rock & sand, formed by glaciers. Collectively they are a 'field' or 'swarm'. These Drumlins are in Glen Torridon. They can vary in size, & their orientation reveals the direction of the ice flow - in this case over 11,500 years ago during glacials in the Highlands.

Want to visit some drumlins for yourself this year? You can explore an interactive map of drumlins and other ice age features here - https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=ffde62df7bac49c6826e1fa35244ab36&s=09

Some good Christmas news!

After lots of hunting, we have finally found a great building!

For the last 3 months we have been working with the owners of the Telford Retail Park to secure Unit 2 in the park (next to Currys) for the Ledge Climbing Gym.

We agreed heads of terms 6 weeks ago and following detailed negotiations, our architect Reynolds Architecture applied for change of use planning permission on the 16th November.

This “change of use” application is now in the public domain which means we can now officially tell everyone this fantastic news.

The building is on one of the best sites in the city and will give us 1393m2 of floor space - aka enough to accommodate over 900m2 of bouldering and lead, a large strength and conditioning space, a Café Kraft style training space, a yoga studio (or event space), good café, and supporting retail.

If planning and the design stages go to schedule we are looking to open late Autumn 2022.

We will keep in touch over the next few weeks as we firm up the plans, timetable and the necessary funding drive.

Third time lucky! 👊

This is the most intense belay I have ever endured. I have not abseiled the line myself to inspect the gear, and although she feels the cluster below the crux at the top is adequate, I am not convinced.

Our Story

This year the festival will be based around camping at Port Beag, Althandhu. Please contact them directly to book accommodation. There's a pub within 2 minutes walk and Reiff (where all the climbing is) is a 5 minute drive (or half hour walk). There will be workshops available to improve your skills and sessions with ropes set up for those who want to give outdoor climbing a try but don't have the right kit yet. Guided days are available too if you want to really work on skills or tackle particular projects.

Friday night is our Geology for Climbers talk in the hall and on Saturday there will be a guided walk from the North West Highlands Geopark, for more info see our event listing or contact [email protected].

On Saturday night there will be a Ceilidh in the village hall with accordion genius Rhuraidh MacLean! Ceilidh tickets are included with camping or will be available on the door.

Festival tickets this year include the talk and ceilidh and are available to purchase from www.reiffclimbingfestival.com for £15. Accommodation is up to you but you will get a free drink from the Am Furan (the campsite bar) with your ticket!
