The Wallingford Historical & Archaeological Society (TWHAS) was founded in 1974. The society has many members consisting mostly of local people. It is a very friendly and welcoming society which anyone can join for a small fee. The society is currently involved in an ongoing project that started as the 'Burh to Borough' project. TWHAS has carried on conducting test pits all around Wallingford in o

rder to better understand the past occupation of the town. So far the society has excavated over 90 test pits! The society has regular pot washing sessions to clean all the finds that come out of the test pits. Anyone can come and help out during the test pits as long you join the society, you do not have to have any experience, most members of the society are amateurs who enjoy digging as a hobby. The society also attends very interesting talks and programmes on a wide range of topics and conducts geophysical surveys and document research. If your looking for a new interesting hobby come and join TWHAS! It is a great way to make new friends and in between the archaeology we drink lots of tea and coffee and eat lots of cake. A remarkable Roman villa has been uncovered at a housing development near Wantage. While working on the site at Brookside Meadows in Grove, archaeologists discovered large quantities of pottery, Roman coins, and painted plaster. The team also found a rare aisled building, thought to have been built later than the villa. They are only halfway through the excavation and still exploring the aisled building’s function. The excavation revealed increasingly rich finds closer to the main villa, including painted plaster with blue pigment from Afghanistan, indicating extensive trade networks within the Roman Empire. Once the excavation is complete, the site will be built over with new houses. [Image credit: ITV Meridian]

Had a lovely walk yesterday and thought I’d share some pictures. Winter aconites and snow drops in castle meadows, flood marks on the lock keepers house at benson lock, art installation on the pill box, sunken boat from the recent floods and a marked post on the Thames path, if anyone knows what the markings mean I’d be interested?
