In winter the slopes of the Caucasian mountains are turning white and covered with a meter layer of snow, that's when Georgia becomes one of the best destinations for all ski and snowboard lovers. Check out our blog post on Gudauri, a ski resort just 2.5 hrs drive from Tbilisi and perfect for a weekend getaway from the capital. Still good for skiing right now!

Fabrika is one of our favourite urban hotspots and multifunctional spaces. It's such a funky mix of cool Soviet vibes and industrial elements, and truly is a symbol of renovation, recreation and reinvention, like it was designed to be. We like to have our team meetings there to get an extra boost of the hip energy, and it will totally be a part of our new tour that we're preparing for you now!

Believe us when we say that it’s totally impossible to resist this freshly baked, still-warm-from-the-oven, local bread called tonis puri, or shotis puri. OK, so the ingredients are pretty basic – flour, water, salt and yeast. And it’s been baked the same way here for centuries, in a special oven called a tone. The most tempting, crunchy part of this bread is always salty, since the walls of the tone are sprinkled with salty water. And we always loose the battle against the temptation to take a sneaky bite of freshly baked goodness on our way home. That's what we call the best street food in Tbilisi!

Organic Georgian tasting is the highlight of our Taste of Tbilisi tour. Even dedicated coffee drinkers are fascinated by the stories of the tea master. During our visit to Bitadze Tea Shop and Museum we drink the unique Georgian wild white tea and learn all the small details about the ways to brew it.

• G E M • Fading glory of the Sololaki district once favored by the rich and the famous of Tiflis in the 19th century. Imagine living in a house on Amagleba street with the entrance hall like this and a chance to admire all the little details every day.

• U P • Observing a new city from the top is a great way to get an idea of its structure and scale on your first day in the city. That's why we highly recommend taking a cable car from the Rike park up to Narikala fortress and Mother of Georgia. Have your camera ready to capture the colourful balconies of the Old Tbilisi during your ride!

• T R A F F I C • One of the first thing you notice when walking along the streets of Tbilisi is the organised chaos of everything, and that's probably Asia revealing itself here. Since we care for the security of our tourists, one of the things we always warn you about is to be extra attentive when crossing the streets. The signage and the lights are not always taken seriously by the drivers, so the thing you should do before crossing the road is make eye contact with the driver first. It would also help to use an underground pass when you can. Funnily enough sometimes a driver would stop in the middle of the street to give you more time for that precious shot of a building with no cars in front of the beautiful entrance door.

• F R U I T • Loquat is a kind of fruit you have probably not tried before, and it's high time you did since they are in season right now! The taste is an unusual mix of mango, yellow apple and peach. It is also known as Chinese/Japanese plum, but locals call it mushmala or bushmala. It is rich in vitamin C and can have sedative effect when consumed in quantity. Interesting to know that the loquat trees were in bloom in winter and spread a fantastic honey-like smell. Now we can enjoy the harvest.

• B R E A D • One of the experiences you must definitely have in Georgia is taking a bite of that fresh warm Georgian bread coming straight out of tone oven. These little bakeries are spread all around the city, they will often look like a small window of an underground level of a building. Look for the Georgian words თომე or პური on the sign and enjoy that 0,80-1 lari well spent to its most.

• HIDDEN GEMS • One of the things we never get tired of in Tbilisi, are the hidden gems spread all over the city, and we actually love hunting for them. Painted entrance halls of the 19th century buildings is our favourite topic to explore. We're eager to share the beauty with you on the tours, but our advice is keep that adventurous spirit when you're walking the city on your own! As long as your respectful to the locals who still live in these buildings, and act quietly, there's nothing wrong with having a look at what's behind that beautiful wooden door... The beauty was made to be seen.

• MOTHER OF GEORGIA • Kartlis Deda, or Mother of Georgia, is probably one of our favourite monuments in Tbilisi. It was established in 1958 to celebrate 1500 years of Tbilisi as a capital. Its first version was made of wood and was not actually supposed to stay for a long time, but since it gained the love of the locals, it was reinforced with aluminium 5 years later, and replaces with a new all-metal version in 1990s. We love the way it celebrates Georgian national character -- generous and welcoming towards friends (no matter the background), and still always ready to fight for its independence with a sword.

• C A R P E T S • The most popular lightweight Georgian carpets are called 'pardagi' and were traditionally hung on walls partly covering the sofas. This craftsmanship originally comes from Tusheti region in the mountains. Widespread sheep breeding in this area was a reliable source of material for hand made carpets. They came very handy in every day nomadic life. All sorts of things could be made from the carpets -- load luggage bags, mats, capes. Each village would have its own pattern, different from the others. Production of 1 carpet consumes a lot of energy and time, and requires special skills. Therefore a handmade carpet cannot be cheap.

• L A N G U A G E • In Old Georgian language the month of May was called ვარდობისთვე which literally translates as "the month when the roses bloom", and the fact is still true - Tbilisi is all covered in beautiful rose flowers and fantastic sweet smell.

• B O O K S • One of the best stores with books in English is hidden in an arch just 2 steps off Rustaveli avenue. There we found some great editions on Georgian and Caucasian cuisine, several guidebooks, and fiction. There's also a café, so consider a plan ready for a relaxed afternoon with a book and a cup of coffee in a cute backyard.
