What a morning for our guide Paul Mensah and his group at Atewa Forest Range. To say the participants are happy would be an understatement as 2 of their main targets were seen just a few minutes apart when Paul spotted this awesome Long-tailed Pangolin and then the rarely seen Nimba Flycatcher. Not the best photo and video as Paul needs a phone upgrade ☹️ but the clients got great views and shots. Well done Paul and Buga sounds like the perfect trip.

Ghana is an ideal destination for birding and photography tours. Our expert guides focus on finding you the birds for you to see and photograph so we take few photos ourselves. So we are always delighted when our participants kindly send us some of their shots to use. Thank you Leslie Clapp for asking us to post these wonderful shots of your recent tour.

Having such a great team of guides, experts in a multitude of areas, enables us to lead a wide variety of tours here in West Africa. I introduce to you our guide Ibrahim Entsie currently leading our 15 day Ghana Herping Tour. This beautiful female Forest Cobra was seen at Nyamebe Bepo Forest Reserve and is one of 12 snake species already seen in the first few days of this trip.

Great feedback from one of our recent Ghana Birding Tours. Thank you for choosing us for your Ghana birding tour Stefan and Carmen.

We just returned from a superb three weeks trip to Ghana which took us to almost all corners of the country, from coastal lagoons, Upper Guinea Rainforest and farm bush, to broad leaved guinea woodland and savannah plains in the north. The tour was organized to perfection by Ashanti African Tours (big hands for Janet!), and everything worked out as planned. Okay, apart from the delay of our outbound flight followed by an night odyssey via Istanbul but this is a different story... Our excellent guide Paul Mensah from the Ashanti team, took very good care of us, was great company and spared no pains to get us on the birds. Not to forget our Ashanti driver Prince (aka "Mambo"), who manouvered the Toyota Hiace around potholes and over muddy dirt roads as if it were a Land Cruiser in fact. As this was our first time birding in West Africa we had long list of target species, and a total of # 324 possible lifers. Paul did a great job and beyond our expectations we ended up with # 239 lifers. Leaving aside White-breasted Guineafowl and Western Wattled Cuckooshrike, from the Upper Guinea endemics we only dipped on Baumann's Greenbul. Though mid October is the end of the rainy saison and we did come across the expected downpours from time to time, mostly this did not impact the birding too much. Allowing for three full days in the generally wet Ankasa National Park turned out to be a wise decision, as there we were hit by the only almost non-productive rain day. See less

James Ntakor and his tour participants are out of the jungle at Ankasa Reserve and had a brilliant time over the past couple of days. An absolute mega sighting of Grey-throated Rail seen here in a poor video as the light not the best after a downpour. Rails were in abundance as they also enjoyed 5 Nkulengu Rails yesterday evening, all perched on the same branch.

Some other highlights include Akun Eagle Owl, Congo Serpent Eagle, Osprey, Yellow-bearded Greenbul, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, Yellow-casqued Hornbill, Spotted Honeyguide, Copper-tailed Starling, Dusky Crested Flycatcher, Brown-chested Alethe, Olive Long-tailed Cuckoo, Red-tailed Bristlebill, Pale-breasted Illadopsis, Forest Robin, Black-capped Apalis, Great Blue Turaco, African Pygmy Goose, Reichenbach and Brown Sunbirds Amongst many others...

A busy week for our birding and wildlife tours as we have had 6 nature tours on the go. One of those is being led by our expert guides Victor Owusu and Jackson Owusu (not related 😊) who have been enjoying the Picathartes Lodge at Bonkro with their 6 participants. Not only did they enjoy several Yellow-headed Picathartes at close range, as they were staying at our new accommodation in the village closest to the forest, they were able to also add Akun and Frasers Eagle Owls to their day list. Comments from the group suggest the lodge is going to be very popular and the best thing is all proceeds go to the community encouraging them to protect the forest and it’s wildlife.

Ankasa Reserve has been fantastic even if a little wet for both of our private Birding and Nature tour groups. A big shout out to our driver Prince (AKA Mambo) for finding both groups a beautiful Tree Pangolin at our campsite inside the forest. Some of the highlights include Red-chested Owlet, Congo Serpent Eagle, Long-tailed Hawk, Nkulengu Rail, African Finfiot, Akun and Frasers Eagle Owl, Red-fronted Antpecker and Lesser Anomalure to mention but a few. A big thanks to our camp leader Francis Dabiagu and his team for looking after our groups so well. Good luck at the Picathartes site today Francis Ntakor and Paul Mensah, we look forward to an update. Also a shout out to Victor Owusu and Jackson Owusu who collect our latest group of birders at the airport later today.

Ghana is open for birding and over the next few months we have several private and scheduled small group tours operating. Two of our tours got underway a couple of days ago and they both have been seeing some excellent species, experiencing the wonderful birdlife of Ghana. Our senior guide Paul Mensah and his birding couple had a wonderful time on the canopy walkway yesterday and our other senior guide Francis Ntakor’s private client on a photography tour got some wonderful photos at Kakum National Park. We look forward to regular updates as both tours progress and with another 2 tours starting this weekend it will be wonderful to see our guides doing what they love most, showing our participants the best of Ghana.

Travelling in August for birding has its advantages as many species are in breeding plumage offering excellent photographic opportunities. However sometimes Mole National Park can still be a little wet in places as seen here. This has not distracted from our guide Victor Owusu’s group having a fantastic time during their 16 day Ghana birding and wildlife tour. Thank you so much Victor Owusu and our senior driver Prince Boamah for another fantastic trip.

Quite simply an incredible trip! What a list of species from our guide James Ntakor during his just completed tailored Ghana Birding target species trip. Our participants were speechless as to the amount of lifers they saw well on their difficult target list. Below are just a few photos of species seen from the final couple of days that include Nimba Flycatcher, Dorst’s Cisticola, Gambaga Flycatcher, Forbes’s Plover, Blue-moustached Bee-eater, Yellow Penduline Tit and Northern White-faced Owl. Thank you James and Prince for another great Ashanti trip.
