Throughout the centuries, Thessaloniki stood as a Metropolis. From its establishment in 316 BC to the various dominions of the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, tens of languages and dialects - from Slavs and Balkanians to Francs and Spanish-Jewish populations - were spoken and used to call her their way: Salonicco, Selanik, Solun, Salonica, or Salonique. There are at least thirteen medieval variants alone- an indexer’s nightmare and a linguist’s delight!
But, Thessalonike /θɛsələˈniːki/ first and foremost was the “princess of Macedonia”.
History links her to three of the most powerful men in Macedonia - daughter of King Philip II, half-sister of Alexander the Great, and wife of Cassander - one of Alexander’s generals.
Moreover, it is the only known example of a city of this size in the Jewish diaspora that retained a Jewish majority for centuries. This community was influenced by the Sephardic world culturally and economically, and the city was nicknamed “la Madre de Israel”.
