The stairs to St. John's Fortress, also known as the Castle of San Giovanni, are a challenging but rewarding hike in Kotor. The trail comprises about 1,350 steps, ascending 1,200 feet (360 meters) from Kotor Old Town to the fortress. Along the way, hikers are treated to stunning panoramic views of Kotor Bay and the surrounding mountains. The fortress itself, dating back to the Byzantine era, offers a glimpse into the region's strategic military history. The climb can be strenuous, especially in hot weather, so it's advisable to bring water and wear comfortable shoes.
