One of my favourite hikes today.
Port to Glencolmcille with a few stops on the way home.
Went to Glencolmcille Folk Museum for lunch. The place was buzzing, craftwork, music and plenty of craic.
Then on to Silve Strand in Malin Beg. What a beautiful spot.
Of course we couldn't go to West Donegal without a visit to Slieve League some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe.

Building Of The Month: July
Carrick, County Donegal

Set against the backdrop of Donegal's rugged landscape, this little house must surely rank among Ireland's most idyllically located historic houses.
Until fairly recent times, roped houses were a feature of the landscape all along exposed Atlantic coastal locations, from the Beara Peninsula in the far south-west, right up around the west coast, and on around the north coast.
Donegal's remaining examples now represent the last remnants of this ingenious design adaptation.

In practice, a network of hand-made sΓΊgΓ‘n (straw) ropes were stretched horizontally and vertically over the thatch and tied to timber or stone pegs that projected from the walls of the dwelling, below the eaves.
When firmly secured, these straw ropes ensured the thatch remained steadfast, regardless of the ferocity of the gale.

Additionally, Donegal's roped houses incorporated a distinctive, shallow, barrel-shaped roof.
This adaptation was deployed to further enhance the roofs ability to disperse the effects of the high winds over the roof surface, and to negate the lack of suitable materials (sturdy timber) in what was, in some areas, a landscape that was devoid of mature trees.

The farm complex has been the subject of some alterations, including the fitting of a tin roof over a previously thatched outbuilding.
The alternations are juxtaposed with the retention of original features such as the stone pegs and the small irregularly spaced openings.
Additionally, the house retains much of its early elementary form, having no significant front or rear extensions.
The combination of features elevates the dwelling to one of national importance and the family are to be applauded for maintaining this gem when so many like it have disappeared in recent years.
