Imbolc, also called Saint Brigid's Day, is a traditional Irish festival which marks the beginning of spring. Imbolc was originally a pagan festival associated with the lambing season and the goddess Brigid. And for Christians, it is the feast day of Saint Brigid, the 5th century saint who is Ireland's patroness saint. Since 2023, Ireland has a bank holiday on the first weekend of February to celebrate and the best spot to enjoy the festivities is Kildare Town, just 30 minutes from Dublin, and the location of St Brigids Cathedral and round tower.

If you're looking for a refined dining experience during your stay in England, make sure to book an afternoon tea, a ritual introduced in Britain in the 1840s. It evolved as a small meal to keep off hunger until a later full evening meal, and tends to consist of tea served with small sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries and cakes. Most of London’s best hotels and restaurants offer it, and there is also the option to take an Afternoon Tea Bus Tour.

The west coast of Scotland has some stunning gardens, and is influenced by the Gulf Stream and so has a milder climate leading to stunning growths of rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias. On the east there are more formal gardens on grand castle estates or in tranquil city escapes.

The aim of any trip to Ireland is to soak up as much of it's rich and varied culture. We can help you to create the perfect itinerary to help you discover the history and culture of the Emerald Isle by including visits to the many museums dedicated to the complex history of the nation, or historical sights such as Newgrange and Dublin Castle. But one should also remember the importance of a visit to another of Ireland’s cultural institutions if you really want to understand what Irish life is really about; the Irish pub. As well as offering you the warm, welcoming company of the locals, and a great pint of Guinness, many also still offer great traditional Irish dishes such as coddle and boxty. And if you stick around into the evening there's the possibility of an impromptu Irish music session.

While Gin has always proven a popular spirit in England, there has been a recent boom in the industry. There were just 26 gin producers in 2010 but there are now closer to 140, with plenty offering tours and masterclasses. Gin emerged in England in the early 17th Century, and it's cheap price versus French Brandy made it popular among the poor. The invention of the column still in the 1820s made the distillation of spirits practical, which led to the creation of the "London dry" style of gin, and in tropical colonies gin grew in popularity as it masked the bitter flavour of the anti-malarial compound, quinine. This led to the popular cocktail, gin and tonic.

December 26 marks St Stephen’s Day in Ireland and Wales. And throughout the UK, the date is celebrated as Boxing Day. St Stephen’s Day commemorates the life of St Stephen, who was known for his service to the poor and his status as the first Christian martyr. According to an Irish myth, it was a wren that betrayed St Stephen while hiding from his enemies, so in Ireland the holiday is sometimes called Wren Day; in the past a wren would be killed and a group of 'Wrenboys' dressed in straw masks, straw suits, and colourful clothing would carry it through the streets accompanied by folk music. Boxing Day In the UK the Boxing Day gets its name from the tradition where the upper classes would ‘box up’ gifts and give them to their servants, the poor or tradespeople the day after Christmas Day.

The earliest Irish writing dates from the 7th century and was produced by monks in Latin and Early Irish, who recorded both poetry and mythological tales. While the English language was introduced to Ireland in the 13th century, Irish remained the dominant language of Irish literature until a decline of it's use began in the 17th century. Ireland’s first great Irish writer in the English language was Jonathan Swift, with numerous others gaining international renown since, including Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Eavan Boland, James Joyce and W. B. Yeats.
