Now in its tenth year, Hang Tough Studio have established themselves as experts in bespoke, archival framing, as well as being exhibitors of unique and innovative artwork. These distinctive exhibitions and print releases were previously under the moniker of ‘Hang Tough’, however 2021 marks the emergence of Hang Tough Contemporary and Hang Tough Editions, which are set to quickly become exciting st

aples on the Irish arts scene. This organic expansion has come about as a reaction both to
the abundance of exciting creativity and talent around us, along with a recognition of the pent-up appetite among the public for cultural engagement. The ethos behind Hang Tough Contemporary
and Hang Tough Editions is to make unique,
unparalleled artistic talent readily
available to a discerning and engaged
audience. We aim to provide a platform
for visual artists, while simultaneously
accommodating an experience where art can
be appreciated and enjoyed in vibrant,
accessible settings. With this in mind,
we jumped at the chance to temporarily
occupy two stunning vacant spaces in
the city centre and reimagine them as
exciting cultural destinations in a
time when artists, art and galleries
all need nourishment.

GALLERY CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT

Following the closure of .studio and .editions earlier today, I am sorrowfully announcing the immediate closure of Hang Tough Contemporary.

My sincere apologies to all the artists, suppliers and staff we have to let down with this news. It is a devastating and an extremely difficult decision to have to make but one that unfortunately is absolutely necessary.

It has been an immense honour to have been in a position to advocate for emerging Irish contemporary artists and their practices by putting their work in front of people through gallery representation, exhibitions and curatorial projects. I've enjoyed each of our exhibition openings, satellite projects and most importantly connecting with the artists and the art community here in Dublin. I believe that we have made a vital and necessary contribution to the visual arts scene here in Ireland and I'm disappointed that we did not have more time to achieve our goals. I hope our work will continue to inspire more support for visual arts culture in the future as we've shown a way to grow a community and to offer hope to all artists.

Thank you to everyone who has connected with us over the past couple of years. All your support has made the gallery journey an exciting and unforgettable campaign.

I would appeal to everyone to support all independent galleries and the tireless work of their gallerists and gallery teams. Attend their free openings on your own or with a friend and support their events and publications. Look up their artists and consider connecting with and collecting their work and become part of the fabric of the visual arts community - there is no culture without community.

Yours sincerely,
Michael 'Rubio' Hennigan

OPENING TONIGHT

Neil Dunne | 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘝𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘦
6 - 9pm, Hang Tough Contemporary, Exchequer St.

This body of works specifically charts Dunne’s exploration of voids that have opened up in our urban spaces. Using these 'non spaces' as an entry point in deciphering the landscape, Dunne deconstructs and expands upon preliminary drawings and referential photography in his studio. He engages with motifs of found flora, fauna and the topography of the city, exploring and probing the divisive ways in which our landscapes are broken, reformed and reimagined. Dunne’s inherent interest in discarded items and human intervention within the landscape have played a crucial role in the formation and development of this collection.

Dan Leo | 𝙁𝙀𝙍𝘼𝙇, opens this evening and is on view until July 2nd.

Leo’s signature style developed over time into recognisably clean lines, satisfying symmetry and deliberately bold, unapologetic swathes of colour. As he embarked on large-scale street murals, he stylistically built on his background in animation; boiling down intricate and nuanced animal identities to an assemblage of vibrant, minimal shapes - all without sacrificing their charm or personality. He successfully lures the viewer in with his playful and unexpected colour pairings, while subverting the ‘roughness’ and typical texture of nature by producing paintings that are intentionally crisp.

Hang Tough Contemporary is thrilled to present 𝙁𝙀𝙍𝘼𝙇, an exhibition of new work by Dan Leo, opening on June 15th and on view till July 2nd. This is the artist's first solo presentation with the gallery.

𝙁𝙀𝙍𝘼𝙇 charts the evolution of Dan Leo’s creative approach. The collection is a study on the visual mathematics of nature, with the universality of the subject provoking instant recognition, engagement and oftentimes amusement in his viewer. Leo is re-examining his use of scale for a refined gallery setting, and expanding his repertoire of media - to include laser-cut wood, transparent acrylic and sculpture - to furnish greater depth to his subjects and advance his compositions.

The opening of this exhibition is a free event but guests are invited to book their attendance through the Eventbrite link in our bio.

Hang Tough Contemporary is delighted to present 𝙎𝙊𝙈𝙀𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀 𝘽𝙇𝙐𝙀, an exhibition of new pastels, embroidery, mixed media and sculptural works by French artist Bertille de Lestrade, opening on May 25th and on view till June 11th. This is the artist's first solo presentation with the gallery

There’s something magical about examining the previous life of an object; extracting stories, deciphering sentiment and reimagining meaning. In this sense, Bertille de Lestrade is simultaneously a collector, a creator and a storyteller that is continually encouraging and satiating her own curiosity.

𝙎𝙊𝙈𝙀𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀 𝘽𝙇𝙐𝙀 inquisitively probes and challenges sensory memory, purposely providing an incomplete narrative that forces the viewer to arrive at their own assumptions and conclusions through de Lestrade’s multidisciplinary practice.

The opening of this exhibition is a free event but guests are invited to book their attendance through the Eventbrite link in our bio.

Wren Wilson’s approach to painting considers the relationship between thought and its formal translation onto her material. Through form and colour, a process of adjustment and readjustment plays out in new territories and surface qualities.

Hang Tough Contemporary is delighted to present 𝙄𝙛 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙬, an exhibition of new works by Irish artist Sarah Wren Wilson. Opening on Thursday May 5th and on view in the gallery till May 21st. This marks the artist's first solo presentation with the gallery.

Wren Wilson’s exhibition 𝙄𝙛 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙬 comprises a series of works that consider the opportunities of the liminal space, an arena that forces us beyond our familiar boundaries. Compositions evolve and shift with loose fluid brush strokes and areas of hard-edged opaque colour singing in contradiction.

Hang Tough Contemporary is delighted to present 𝙊𝙉𝙀 𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝘾𝙇𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙄𝙉𝙂, an exhibition of new paintings by polish artist Katarzyna Gajewska. Opening on Thursday March 23rd and on view in the gallery till April 9th. This is the artist's first solo presentation with the gallery.

𝙊𝙉𝙀 𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝘾𝙇𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙄𝙉𝙂 borrows its title from the critically acclaimed 1961 book by Anthony Burgess. The author explains, “The clasped hands of marriage have been reduced to a single hand. Yet it claps.”

It is a metaphor that we are defined by what is around us; how we relate to others and the world. “One hand clapping” is the phrase encouraging reflection upon the meaning of life and the true nature of reality. It is a dialogue and invitation. It is also a sound of silence.

The opening of this exhibition is a free event but guests are invited to book their attendance through the Eventbrite link in our bio.
