In Humbert's Footsteps

'Killala, County Mayo'-View from Killala Quay by Edward King Tenison, 1858.

A pioneering photographer, 'considerate landlord', and MP for Leitrim from 1847 -1852, Edward King Tenison, whose ancestor had been Lord Bishop of Killala in 1681, helped to develop the techniques of using paper negatives to create detailed photographic images of landscapes and buildings. He died in 1878 at the family estate Tenison Castle, now Kilronan Castle Hotel, county Roscommon. Image courtesy of National Library of Ireland: Collection Kilronan Album.

I was delighted to welcome Steve Dunford to Leinster House this morning to congratulate him on been presented with the "Médaille de la Jeunesse, des sports et de l'Engagement Associatif "by the French Ambassador for his consistent role in researching and promoting the story of General Humbert and the "Year of the French". This is a medal awarded by the President of France so it's a massive achievement for Steve, his family and for North Mayo. It was a superbly deserved honour. Never one to rest on laurels-Steve has big plans for 2018-the 220th anniversary of the "Year of the French"!
