The National Famine Way is one of Ireland's newest way marked trails. There are 30 bronze shoes along the entire route which tell the story of the 1480 emigrants marched from Strokestown to Dublin.

During the peak of the Irish famine over 1,490 emigrants walked from Roscommon to Dublin.

The children’s bronze shoes, that are cast in bronze along the route, were discovered by a local farmer in the roof of a ruined 19th century cottage. The National Famine way features throghout the Royal Canal Greenway - anyother great reason to visit.
