A meticulously curated patio area, adorned with neutral-tone patterns, takes center stage. The barsati emerges as the focal point of the dwelling, seamlessly integrating nature into its heart. 🍃🌞

Project Spotlight: Mannargudi
This spacious family lounge on the first floor overlooks paddy fields into the distance and acts as a semi-private vantage point from which to consider the views in all directions. A folded slab RCC staircase acts as a sculptural element, highlighting the minimally and natural material finishes.

Project Spotlight: Mannargudi

Handcrafted "Athangudi tiles" hailing from the village of Athangudi in Chettinadu, Tamil Nadu, adorn the this house designed by us, located in Mannargudi. They are cast in glass moulds which give them a shine ✨ and earlier were made with locally available coloured oxides, although now a wide variety of chemical dyes are used.

A modern twist on a traditional typology of the tiled sunshade - for this sunshade design, we worked with skilled Kerala wood joinery craftsmen to create a minimal wooden bracket design out of salvaged wood to function as wraparound sunshades that can also keep out the rain in the monsoon climate of Chennai. Not a single nail was used for any sunshade or verandah covering.

Inspiration can come from a variety of sources. When designing a crockery display for House with a Pond, it became clear that the client's painstakingly curated crockery collection, rather than the cabinetry, could be the main focus. The crockery exuded a wabi-sabi quality with its muted tones, textures, and local flavour. We reduced the cabinetry to simple open shelves that adorn the space between the kitchen and dining. Each interior view of the house has been framed to provide layers and spatial depth, with each layer telling a story about the space's users.

Handcrafted to Last
This is an indoor-outdoor space adjoining the dining designed for "House with a Pond" that creates a space for gathering as well as solitary reflection while signifying values related to sustainability and circular economies. the basic structure is made of salvaged teak assembled with traditional joinery from the neighbouring South Indian state of Kerala. The solid stone ornamental pillars and edging around the verandah floor have been salvaged and recycled in their new setting. A traditional 100+ year-old South Indian solid teak swing that has been in the client's family for 4 generations has been given a setting. An outhouse building made of locally sourced dry-stacked random rubble provides depth to the verandah. All of the materials in this space are designed to have timeless appeal and in fact to look better with time.

Detailing: showcasing traditional Kerala carving for the column capital. The locally sourced salvaged grey granite columns from Pondicherry have been placed such that the notch between them provides a perfect setting for the carved wooden capital (also made of salvaged wood!). Circular economies can be beautiful.

In the "Lime"-light, is a picture of a test patch of non-pigmented lime plaster for our ongoing project in Sonipat, Haryana. It is applied by a skilled lime craftsman from Bhilwara, Rajasthan. Because of its porosity and permeability, lime mortar allows the structure to breathe, allowing it to maintain a cool microclimate in hot regions and reducing dampness and other problems. Not only that, but it is a "low VOC" substance, which contributes to better interior air quality.
