For those of you who want to fly in the Qsuites, save this post. I'm going to tell you exactly how I booked it for our trip to Africa.
This has been an aspirational trip of mine for a few years. I knew it would take a lot of points, so I had to plan far ahead so I could book this trip but still be able to do family trips along the way.
When I started planning, the only feasible way for me was to use AA miles. It cost me 150k AA miles per person (plus about $110) in taxes for a RT ticket. If you want to try another airline one of the ways, it'll cost you half that. Note: if you're wanting to go to the Maldives, that will cost you 70k/one way. I mostly earned these points thru credit card welcome bonuses. At the time, Citi & Barclays cobranded cards were only real options.
Over the course of a year we signed up for multiple business/personal cards when they had elevated bonuses. Typically we'd average about 70k points per bonus so it added up quick.
However, now you have a couple more options. Qatar just joined the Avios program so you can actually Qsuites with your British Airways points or transfer them to your Qatar account as well. Qatar charges you based on the distance of the total flight and not per segment like BA, so it'll cost the same or fewer points using Qatar.
Avios points are transfer partners with all of the major banks. Plus, there are typically frequent transfer bonuses which makes Avios easy to earn.
However, it'll cost you more miles to use this program. To fly to Africa it will cost around 95k Avios points each way plus taxes. If you want to go to the Maldives, it'll cost 85k points.
Be sure to save this post or tag a friend who's dying to trying the Qsuites so you can check this off your bucket list. It's so worth the effort!
