Here's how I booked a trip for my daughter and I using points from the welcome bonus of just 1 credit card.

Sometimes it's hard to visualize what points can be worth so I hope this puts it into a better perspective.

Another thing I wanted to point out is the extra value you can get from your points by transferring them to the bank's travel partners.

If I would have booked my trip using the bank's travel portal, I would have been able to cover $1,250 worth of travel. By transferring the points to the airlines/hotel, I was able to get $3,498 in value.

Let me know if you have any questions and if you want to know which card's bonus I used to book this trip, comment 100k below.

Here's the itinerary for a trip I took to Ireland I took before I got into points and miles.

We spent a week driving all over the country and it was absolutely incredible! Ireland is one of the most gorgeous places I've ever visited.

Driving a manual transmission on the other side of the road was definitely interesting. I only smashed one of the side mirrors, so I call it a win.

I highly recommend everyone go and visit. If you have any questions about the trip, just drop them in the comments below.

One of the best ways to get the most value out of your points is to book flights using partner airlines.

This past weekend I booked flights on United using Turkish Airlines miles. This is possible because they are both members of the Star Alliance.

This one is a little trickier than most but it was a great deal, so it was totally worth the extra effort.

Here are some tips and tricks on how I was able to do it. If you have any questions, drop them in the comments.

When we were in Mexico last week we had an interesting experience with the ATM machine.

When using an ATM overseas, be sure to use an account that refunds you the ATM fees if you use another bank's ATM. There are a few free options out there if you don't currently have one.

This time we were told to decline the exchange rate the bank offered us. I never knew this was an option.

I thought it was take it or leave it. Turns out, you can decline it. The first exchange rate is the rate offered by the bank whose ATM you're using. I guess it's another way for them to earn a fee.

So we declined it and were given the rate our bank back home was offering which was much better. Saved us $28.

I don't know if this happens in other countries or if this is the start of a new trend. Either way, I'll be declining the initial rate from now on.

Worst case, it spits my card out and I have to start the transaction over. Best case, I save a grip of cash.

Have you ever run into this before?

Here's another way to save money on your next Allegiant flight from the comfort of your own home.

There's no need to go down to the airport for this one. It's easy and convenient.

This method is great if you don't live close to the airport.

Be sure to follow me for more ways to travel more for less. Make sure to send this to a friend who flies Allegiant so they can up their travel game too.

Traveling as a family can be both logistically and financially difficult. One loyalty program I think is family-friendly is Flying Blue.

A few months ago I used this program to book our family's flight to Europe.

Here are the reasons why I think the program can be great for families...with one caveat. So be sure to swipe to the end.

There's no question I love redeeming my points for stays. I think they're a great product for a great value.

One thing I love, is the number of points needed doesn't fluctuate a lot between peak, standard and off-peak nights so it's easy to plan for.

To put these redemptions into perspective, the standard "blue bank" offer for a card whose points you can use at Hyatt is 60k points. So on average, you should be able to get 3-4 free nights out of the one bonus.

Here is a list of my favorite Hyatt hotels that I've stayed at using points. I obviously haven't stayed at every Hyatt hotel, so which one is your favorite that isn't on this list?

Last week I was charged the $395 annual fee for Venture X card. While that's a lot of money to pay for an annual fee, I'm definitely going to keep it for another year.

The key with every card is to get more value from it than what you pay for the fee. If you can't do that, then you should cancel the card.

Swipe to see how I'm going to get more than $395 out of the Venute X card this year. If you want to learn more about the card, see the link in my bio.

When you're planning to go to a major sporting event or concert, hotel prices in the area tend to skyrocket.

But thanks to points and miles, you can score some very affordable rates to make that dream trip a reality.

These rates are for the "Big Game" in 2 weeks here in Phoenix. As you can see, there's still award availability with for that weekend. Spoiler alert, one welcome bonus can pay for all 3 nights and you would still have points left over.

If you are planning to go to a major event in the future, you'll want to starting earning those points now. And if you don't know how to earn or redeem your points, follow me and I'll show you how.

Every time an annual fee hits, I reevaluate if I'm going to keep the card and you should too!

Last month the $695 annual fee hit in my wife's Platinum card so I took another look. The large $695 fee isn't the problem. It's the value that it gives me. Here's how I broke it down.

My wife almost never travels alone, so not being able to bring a guest to the Centurion lounge almost makes this worthless for us.

This card comes with a lot of credits that can offset the fee you pay. Unfortunately, outside of the airline fee credit, we don't typically shop at the stores where they give credits to. So I value those credits at a fraction of the amount they give.

I asked for a retention bonus and wasn't offered anything.

It also comes with a Priority Pass membership but I already get that thru another card.

I do get value out of some of the Amex offers but just not enough to get over the $695 hump and make it worth it to keep the card.

Remember, annual fees aren't bad but not getting more value than what you pay is. Let me know if you have any questions.

Buying groups can be a great part of your points earning strategy. I’ve been using them for the past couple of years and have earned a lot of points working with them.

However, buying groups do take effort and you need to be organized in order to be successful. If you’ve thought about dipping your toe in the buying group arena, I wrote a blog post with everything you need to know about them.

I had several people ask me about our itinerary from our Tanzania trip. If you're planning a safari, you'll want to save this post.

Day 1 - After about 36 hours of traveling we didn't have anything scheduled our first day in Zanzibar. We walked around Stone Town a little and just relaxed.

Day 2 - We booked a walking tour of Stone Town to learn more about the city's history and culture.

Day 3 - We booked a snorkeling tour out to Mnemba Island.

Day 4 - This was a travel day from Zanzibar over to Arusha to begin the safari.

Day 5 - Did a game drive in Tarangire Park.

Day 6 - Half day game drive in Ngorongoro Crater and then drive to Serengeti.

Day 7 - Game drive in Serengeti Park which was our favorite of the 3.

Day 8 - Started our long journey home.

For those of you who want to fly in the Qsuites, save this post. I'm going to tell you exactly how I booked it for our trip to Africa.

This has been an aspirational trip of mine for a few years. I knew it would take a lot of points, so I had to plan far ahead so I could book this trip but still be able to do family trips along the way.

When I started planning, the only feasible way for me was to use AA miles. It cost me 150k AA miles per person (plus about $110) in taxes for a RT ticket. If you want to try another airline one of the ways, it'll cost you half that. Note: if you're wanting to go to the Maldives, that will cost you 70k/one way. I mostly earned these points thru credit card welcome bonuses. At the time, Citi & Barclays cobranded cards were only real options.

Over the course of a year we signed up for multiple business/personal cards when they had elevated bonuses. Typically we'd average about 70k points per bonus so it added up quick.

However, now you have a couple more options. Qatar just joined the Avios program so you can actually Qsuites with your British Airways points or transfer them to your Qatar account as well. Qatar charges you based on the distance of the total flight and not per segment like BA, so it'll cost the same or fewer points using Qatar.

Avios points are transfer partners with all of the major banks. Plus, there are typically frequent transfer bonuses which makes Avios easy to earn.

However, it'll cost you more miles to use this program. To fly to Africa it will cost around 95k Avios points each way plus taxes. If you want to go to the Maldives, it'll cost 85k points.

Be sure to save this post or tag a friend who's dying to trying the Qsuites so you can check this off your bucket list. It's so worth the effort!

Once points and miles have taken you where you want to go, it can still be expensive after you get there. Especially when you travel as a family!

That's where bank bonuses come in. What are bank bonuses? This is when a bank gives you a cash bonus for opening up a bank account and completing certain transactions.

These bonuses can easily be few hundred dollars! We usually do several of these throughout the year. This is how our family subsidizes the activities we do while on a vacation.

These bonuses are also a great way to fund an emergency fund, pay off debt, put towards tuition, save up for a car or any other big purchase.

My favorite resource to see what bonuses are currently available is Doctor of Credit. This site maintains a list of the best current offers and the requirements for each.

Make sure you save this post so you don't forget where to find free money.😂

Lodging can easily be the most expensive part of traveling as a family. In Alaska that's especially true. Here's how we used credit cards points to pay for a lot of it on our trip.

We decided to stay the first and last night of our trip in Anchorage. You'll find hotels from all of the major chains in the city. We stayed at the Hyatt Place because you can fit up to 6 people in those rooms. Each room cost us 15k points/nt and comes with free breakfast. We earned these points from our card and from our other "blue bank" cards. You can also transfer points from the card if you have one of those.

The next couple of nights we stayed in a rental. We booked it using our points. We booked a "1 bedroom" that actually slept 7 for 15k points/nt. You can transfer points from both Citi and Capital One to Wyndham. As of today, the Citi Premier card as a limited-time 80k welcome bonus and the Venture and Venture X cards both have 75k point welcome bonuses.

The last couple of nights we rented an Airbnb in Homer. Back when we signed up for the Venture X card it came with a $200 vacation rental credit (that offer has since expired) that we used to help offset the cost. You can also use the Venture points to "erase" travel expenses if you want to do that.

If you're interested in any of the cards mentioned above, here's a link to all of the current offers.

Here's how we hacked our family's flights for our trip to Alaska last week.

Sometimes in the hobby we can be overly obsessed with paying $0 for flights that we overlook other options. About 6 months ago, a flight deal service sent me an alert for flights from Phoenix to Anchorage for $189/person. I found availability for 7, so I booked it.

So how does that compare to booking with miles? The best deal I'm aware of would be to book a United flight using 15k Turkish miles. The problem is that finding that award availability is extremely difficult for one, let alone 7. And if you were to find it, you most likely would need to be flexible with your schedule.

In this example, if I didn't want to pay cash for these flights, I could've paid for them with a card like the Venture X and "erased" the purchase for 18,900 points/person, which is just a little bit more than "the best deal".

My point is to simply not ignore paying cash for flights when you see a good deal. I subscribe to flight alert service and I get deals delivered several times a week. There's other great services like or if you want premium cabin deals specializes in that.

Make me jealous, what great cash fares have you booked?

Ok, let's talk about how to travel hack vacation rentals. Did you know you can book Vacasa rentals using points?

This summer we have a trip to Alaska booked. Outside of Anchorage there really aren't any hotels so we'll be staying at vacation rentals.

We found some nice options with Vacasa for 2 of the nights and you can book them using Wyndham points. They only cost 15k/pts/nt/room. So a rental that has 2 bedrooms will cost 30k/pts/nt.

You can find some great deals this way. We found a house that is only 1 bedroom but has a loft with a couple beds and sleeps 7, so it cost us just 15k/pts/nt. The cash rate was $500+/night.

You're probably about to ask, "Hey Rob, why would I waste my time collecting Wyndham points when there are so many other points out there?"

Technically, I agree. But this is why I always recommend cards whose points you can transfer to a variety of airlines & hotels. Did you know you can transfer both Capital One and Citi points to Wyndham?

This is why the current 100k point offer from Cap One is so valuable. With that bonus, I could book 6 nights at this property and save over $3k.

Plus, for a limited time, it also comes with a $200 credit on vacation rental purchases which we actually used to offset a cash rate we booked on Airbnb.

Last week we took the family up to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. They're a little out of the way but totally worth the stop!

You'll need to make reservations for Antelope Canyon but now is the best time to go. They're limiting capacity and a lot of people don't know that they've reopened after being closed for over a year.

I wrote a blog post on everything you need to know to plan your trip. And how to use your points to reduce the cost of going there.

Last week a fellow father of 5 reached out to me about wanting to take his family to Disney World for a week. He asked if he could bounce some ideas off of me about how he could pay for most of it using points.

I asked him a few questions to get a better understanding of his plans and where he was earning points. After that, we set up a call to talk through a strategy to get his family to Florida.

He had just earned the 100k point bonus from the popular card from “that bank” and was looking to get a second card. His hope was to be able to go to Disney World in 2024. After about an hour on the phone, we had a revised plan that could realistically get them there by the end of 2022.

This is exactly why I started this IG account. I love helping people (especially families) go on trips they never thought were possible. If you’d like help creating a road map to get you to where you want to go, just send me a DM. I’m always happy to help.

Let me tell you why I love Hyatt when traveling as a family. This fall we're planning a trip to the college I went to for a football game. The kids had so much fun the last time, why not do it again?

This trip came about when I saw a fare sale and jumped on it. Normally we stay with my brother but in case he wasn't going to be around I started looking at hotels while I waited to hear back from him.

About a mile from the stadium is a Hyatt place. Swipe left and you'll see for the weekend we're in town, a room will cost $261 + tax per night. No gracias.

You'll also notice that if you have Hyatt points, each room only costs 5k points/night which is an absolute steal. Especially since our family needs two rooms.

For those who are new to the hobby, 5k points sounds like a lot so let me put it into perspective. Right now, the most popular beginner card from the "blue" bank comes with a 100k point bonus after you spend $4k in 3 months. With that bonus, you could stay 20 nights at this hotel!🤯

The other nice thing about Hyatt is that the number of points you need at each hotel is fixed based on the category and won't change. This makes it super easy to plan a trip in the future. And when you're planning a family vacation, it's nice not to have to deal with a moving target.

If you have any questions, leave me a comment below or shoot me a DM.
