It is surrounded by Thrissur District to the north, Idukki District and Tamil Nadu State to the east, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts to the south and Arabian sea to west. Its headquarters is located at Kakkanad, a suburb of Kochi city. The language people speak in Ernakulam is Malayalam which is the mother-tongue of the State of Kerala. English is widely used in business circles. Ernakulam became India's first 'fully literate district' in 1990 and the country's first district having 100 percent banking.

Vallarpadam terminal, Kochi Port.⛴️🛳️🚢

India's first transshipment terminal, faced lots of hurdles like cabotash law, competition from established terminals from colombo etc. It slowly overcomed and reached to the growth path. Now central govt had shown green flag to increase the draft to 18 meters which will allow motherships upto 20000 TEUs to dock in the port. With this Kochi will be the deepest major port in tbe country. Draft will again increased to 20meters in future according to the peformance.
