Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge) is an icon of our city. The first vehicle to cross this bridge was a Tram, which after 51 years of operation had to be pulled out. Buses from Howrah to Calcutta were also among the early vehicles to cross this bridge.
Infact there are two routes which are in operation now for about 100 years. Route no 52 (Ramrajatala to Esplanade) and 56 (Ruiya Purbapara to Howrah). Interestingly, steam buses were used initially to ferry passengers. Again, wooden buses, which are now a thing of the past, some of them are in operation in route no. 56. The last wooden body bus to be registered was WB-11B-3986.

Remember Route number 36 of Trams? Kidderpore to Esplanade and back. Probably the best scenic views across when the Trams moved down the dedicated lines over Maidan.
It's a pity that this service had to be closed down because of the messing up of overhead wires caused by the cyclone Amphan. The State Government till date has not done anything to bring back the Trams on this route.

Past midnight. At Kumortuli Ghat. Charak Pujo in progress. We came across this Hindu festival being performed on the banks of Hooghly river, while we were on our whole night city tour of Heritage and Haunted places. This festival is held in honour of Lord Shiva.
Charak Gajan started initially as a celebration by the Buddhist community. Later when this festival was adopted by the Hindus it came to be known as "Shiber Gajan".

This is 'Beth Tephillah'. Meaning 'House of Prayer'. This is our very own Old Mission Church. Locally known during the colonial times as Lal Girja.
This Church is more than 250 years old. Older than St. John's Church.
Isn't this interesting to know that Michael Madhusudan Dutta was baptized here in mid 19th century? Not only this. The Church did welcome a Chinese congregation. Truly this part of the city holds many faiths together in one garland!

August 2nd is celebrated as the World Anglo Indian day.
India is rich in diversity and she has many communities that make her proud. In all those diversities , the Anglo Indian Community takes a place. Today, the 2nd of August , is celebrated as the “World Anglo Indian Day".
Anglo Indians, are essentially urban dwellers who are of mixed blood descending from the British on the male side and women from the Indian side. These type of people have greatly spread to all parts of the world and still carry out their proud name of British ancestry and that of Indian blood. The Anglo Indians have scattered to parts of America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and some of them still stay in India and are proud to call her 'Our Motherland'. The Anglo Indian community is a very small one and their native language is English.
The Government of British India had officially passed an Act on August 2nd, 1935 defining and recognising this conmunity. It is for this reason that this day is celebrated every year as Anglo Indian Day.
Kolkata Explorers wishes all Anglo Indians in Calcutta good health and good times.
