Coming up Konnagar Heritages. Saturday. July 13, 2024.

This is the remains of a dock at Konnagar. Dr. Crawford, Medical Gazetteer, mentioned about the existence of a dock at Konnagar early in the 19th century where ships were built.

Was this the dock of the Greeks, who camped at Rishra? Or was this used by the Danes who were settled in Serampore?

Come for an informative day tour, curated by Kolkata Explorers.

What Champs Elysees is to Paris, Fifth Avenue is to New York, Park Street is to Kolkata. This is what Nitin Kothari of Mocambo and Peter Cat had to say. Truly so!

Park Street - Camac Street has figured in the top five high street destinations in India and ranked higher than fancied locations like Connaught Place in Delhi, Lokhandwala in Mumbai, Commercial Street in Bengaluru and Anna Nagar in Chennai. Park Street is an enduring image of organised retail, brands, restaurants, roadside eateries and the built heritages.

Coming up on Sunday, June 30, we start on our Walk from an iconic building at the crossing of Park Street and JN Road. Rediscover this happening street of Kolkata.

Will finish the walk with breakfast at Flurys.
Details and bookings at WhatsApp 9874062962.

Park Street now renamed to Mother Teresa Sarani never sleeps. This video was taken by us close to midnight on an uneventful day!

Amazing to sit back and think that once a road named Burial Ground Road, in the middle of desolate field and away from the city through which passed the funeral processions, can during the 20th century become an iconic place of this city.

2 places left for our Sunday walk.

Coming up this Saturday, June 29, 2024.

Lenin Sarani Walks. Starts at 8am. Concludes at 11am.

The Russians offered Calcutta a bronze statue of Lenin to celebrate the centenary of his birth. It cost the city Rs 40,000/- to mount alongside the tram terminus at the top of the Maidan, but there it now stands, gazing down the new Lenin Sarani, upon a plinth which was placed in the centre of the small public garden initially dedicated to Lord Curzon.

Dharmatalla Street was renamed to Lenin Sarani. With the growth of the city during the British Raj, Lenin Sarani became one of the repositories of history in the city.

Remembering a great Institution on this Music Day. More than 100 years old The Calcutta School of Music (CSM) at Sunny Park, Kolkata. This is their third address after Wellesley street and Park Mansions. Noticeable that even though Calcutta got a new name "Kolkata", this Institution refuses to change its heritage. CSM is still the icon of the city's Western classical ethos.

The journey of CSM started in autumn of 1915, months after the First World War had broken out when Philipe Sandre, a Frenchman, started imparting music lessons with his possession, a violin. Later on as the Institute grew in size and in number of students, Indian music was introduced. The veteran sitarist Joya Biswas had inaugurated the Indian music section in 1975. It was therefore quite obvious that in celebrating the centenary of CSM, a harmonium and tabla striking a chord on Tagore numbers was as enthralling as the symphony emanating from piano, violin or a classical guitar. But, anyhow, it is always the Western music that takes precedence over Indian music in this vintage Institution.

CSM has some famous alumni. Composer Clarence Barlow, Jazz musician Louis Banks, Violinist and Conductor Abraham Mazumdar (incidentally Sir Abraham Mazumdar was at one time our Music teacher in Calcutta Boys' School).

Along the river - Fairlie to Lal Dighi.
A walk in the so called 'white town' of this city. The image shared is from our last walk done for a group of high profile IRS and IAS Officers from outside our city.

Coming up, our next Walk in this area. On Saturday, June 22, 2024. Morning.

Fairlie Place owes its name to William Fairlie, a distinguished merchant in Calcutta during the times of Lord Wellesley. He was made the Sheriff of Calcutta (1808).

In the Calcutta Gazette of April 25, 1799, he appears as a candidate for a contract for "supplying and feeding elephants and camels for the service of the army in Bengal Presidency". Fairlie's name occurs frequently as one of the "Gentlemen of the Grand Jury".

More such interesting trivias regarding our old city as we walk down the path.

East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) is the only Ramsar site in the world which uses the city's sewage for fisheries and agriculture after a natural cleansing of the dirty water. This is a wonder which has evoked lot of interest among the zoologists and school students.

But unfortunately areas in this Wetland are being systematically lost to real estate developers, endangering the disposal of the city's waste and other productive activities. One reason for low cost of living of this city is attributed to the fact of supplies of fish and vegetables from the EKW directly to the city markets which are in proximity.

It is high time that we realise the importance of protecting this Wetland. Sector 5 of Salt Lake and Rajarhat township are said to have come up on parts of wetlands. A Ramsar tag does not provide any legal protection, but multi-lateral holding agencies, including World Bank, do not fund any project there.

Join us this Sunday morning for an in-depth understanding of this spectacular site!

Geoffrey Moorhouse writes that very few Europeans have ever said anything nice about Calcutta during the days of the British rule in India.

But there have been exceptions. William Hunter, a junior contemporary of Sir George Trevelyan wrote home to his fiancee, "Imagine everything that is glorious in nature combined with all that is beautiful in architecture, and you can faintly picture to yourself what Calcutta is".

Yes with the colonial rule, Bengal has lost her riches. The young Bengalees could not accept this. They revolted. They wanted freedom.

Binoy Badal Dinesh, the three youngsters (facing Writer's Building as in the image shared) stormed into Writers to shoot dead Simpson.

Inside Nakhoda Masjid, have you noticed this script?

This one denotes "La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah". Signifying that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Thank you Nafisa Ahmed for helping us to decode this (Arabic script).

Islam in Bengal was preached by Sufi pirs, who came mainly from Persia and central Asia. An indirect proof of this is that Allah is Khuda in Bengal, salat is namaz, Ramadan is roza, zannat is beheseth and jahannum is dozokh. So it was not through Arabic but Farsi that Islam came to Bengal.

The word "Na - Khoda" speaks of Farsi Islam. Infact there is a story which is more of a folklore, regarding this word 'Nakhoda'.

Take a walk with us on Sunday morning, June 16, on the eve of Eid-ul-Johar, from 8am to 10am to unravel the past.

South Kolkata too has its own share of stories. Here is one.

Kolkata and Itachuna Rajbadi in Hooghly connection:

Raybahadur Bijoy Narayan Kundu was a well known and highly regarded zamindar of the village of Itachuna, Hooghly, for his kindness. He had established a high school and a college in the village where education was free for the village boys and girls. All expenditures were mitigated from his Estate.

There is a house of Raybahadur Bijoy Narayan Kundu on Palit Street, near Maddox square, Kolkata. Wonderfully maintained for over 100 years.

Those who have visited Itachuna Rajbadi in Hooghly must have noticed the road in front of Rajbadi. That road is named after Raybahadur Bijoy Narayan Kundu.

The half bust of Purna Chandra Mukhopadhyay at Panihati. This is the 175th year of Purna Chandra and strangely there is not much awareness of the great contributions of this man in the field of archaeology.

Purna Chandra Mukhopadhyay was born in 1849 at Panihati. He is the man who has discovered the birth place of Gautam Buddha at Lumbini.

This is the wood block of the children's magazine Sandesh (সন্দেশ), which has achieved a cult status. First published by Upendrakishore Ray in 1913. We could locate this in the place where once resided Ashokananda Das and his wife Nalini Das.

Ashokananda was the younger brother of Jibanananda Das. And Nalini Das ( 5 August 1916 – 26 March 1993) was a Bengali educationist, writer and editor. She was one of the editors of the Bengali children's magazine Sandesh.

This is also the place where on October 14, 1954, Jibanananda Das was hit by a tram near Deshapriya Park. His life came to a sudden halt at the age of 55.

East Kolkata Wetland :
How much difference could a foot of water possibly make? For thousands of fishermen and vegetable farmers in the East Kolkata Wetlands, it could mean the difference between a decent livelihood and chronic want. And this happens to be a Ramsar site in West Bengal, and a lifeline for many!

The wetlands in the east of Kolkata are part of a unique ecosystem that thrives on wastewater from India’s third-most populated metro city. It is the world’s largest organic sewage treatment system that doubles up as a vegetable garden and fishery that supply more than a half of the city’s daily requirement.

Coming up on Sunday morning. June 23, 2024. 8am to 11am.

Year 1778. The watershed moment for Bengal, at Serampore. Panchanan Karmakar under the supervision of English Company employee Charles Wilkins, developed the first complete set of types in Bengali letters. These types were used to produce "A Grammar of the Bengali Language", the first book to be printed in the Bengali script.

Image shared is the house of Panchanan Karmakar at Serampore, taken by us in our previous explorations.

03/06/2024

Job Charnock, as an Agent of English East India Company, landed at Hathkhola (near Nimtala Ghat, Sutanauti) for the last and final time on August 24, 1690. He died in this city two years later. The nucleus of the English East India Company was shifted to the periphery of Lal Dighi by Sir John Goldsborough, the Company's Chief Governor of all the Settlements, who came to Sutanauti after Charnock's death.

The first walled enclosure and a bastion built by the English came up around the last decade of 17th century, much to the disliking of Siraj ud Daulah. This walled enclosure was the first Fort William, in the plot now occupied by the GPO, Calcutta Collectorate, RBI and the Eastern Railway offices. This was erased by Siraj ud Daulah in 1756.

Writers' Building, a barrack - like construction on the northern side of Lal Dighi (Tank Square), was where the first writers, as the junior clerks of the English East India Company were called, wrote up the books of accounts for a few hours, led a rip-roaring life and were forever in debt to their 'munshis'.

In October 1776, two parcels of land were granted to Thomas Lyon and in 1777 a range of buildings were erected in one parcel of the land but the land opposite on the northern side of Lal Dighi was never built.

In 1882, during the reign of Sir Ashley Eden as Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, the Writers' Buildings underwent transformation. A new facade using the Corinthian order and Baroque statuary were introduced. In 1883, the Rotunda portion was completed, where Simpson, shot dead by Binoy Badal Dinesh, had his office room.
