The grand old chef who not only took Awadhi Cuisine to the world stage but also helped Tornos to curate its legendary Culinary Walking Tour and later inspired us to set up Gastroutes, an exclusive food tour brand, passed away yesterday. May Imtiaz Qureshi’s soul rest in peace.

It’s Salami Day today - Salami is cured sausage made from fermented and/or air-dried meat. Traditionally Salami was made from pork although nowadays, it is made with all manner of meat or game – beef, lamb, duck, venison, even horse or donkey – or a mixture of any of the above. If you are a meat eater, you must try it in whatever you have today for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We at Gastroutes are doing a special Salami Lunch at all our offices across to celebrate this awesome dish.

Today 7 July is the World Chocolate Day or call it International Chocolate Day and we at Gastroutes wish you chocolates, synonym of love and care.

Happy Holi! - a traditional sweet of the festival of Holi is 'GUJIYA' which is made at homes and is available in the market with many modern versions of it which includes baked gujiya and some healthy filling too. - (Gujiya are crescent shaped filled pastry that is deep fried. The traditional gujiya recipe has a filling of sweeetned khoya or mawa (milk solids), cardamom and some nuts. These delish fried pastries resemble the Mexican empanadas. In fact gujia are very much popular in North India, especially during the Holi festival.)

In India we are very proud of our food but rarely have we talked or taken pride in our heritage alcoholic beverages. Very recently we have been talking a bit about some very fine Indian single malts and more recently India’s gin but there is absolutely no talk of our heritage liqueur that is produced in many regions of Rajasthan, one of them being Mahansar in the district of Jhunjhunu which produces ‘Maharani Mahansar’ - A really fine drink which has been around with the effort of Rajendra Singh Shekhawat, 8th generation scion of Mahansar family. This one is has an aroma and taste of aniseed. It is best mixed with just a bit of water but a shot of it is good too after a meal. Many things in India are underrated and our heritage liquor is one of them. - We are loving it and we are sure you all would love it too - Cheers !!!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas. Did you know 'Garam Masala' is an important ingredient of the Christmas Plum Cake in many parts of India and then each Christian Home has its own family recipe of the cake. They often make the batter and then take them to the baker to get it baked in the wood-fired ovens. This tradition lives on still in many households in spite of electric ovens being present in every house.

Today is World Heritage Day. We speak so much about the monuments but seldom think of Heritage Food. India is home to umpteen Heritage Food that traces its history to the era of Ramayana and Mahabharata and later to Hindu rules up to the Mughals and finally Dutch, French and English in India.
