India Himalayas
The Himalayas, roof of the world, is a magic place where the magnificence of the world’s highest mountains is mirrored in the rugged beauty and unique culture of the people who live in their shadows
Home Stay is Any private house located in rural areas of the State in good condition and easily accessible in the country-side i.e. within the Farm House, Orchards, Tea-Gardens etc. will primarily qualify under the Scheme. A directory of all such approved establishments will also be prepared, so as to enable domestic as well as foreign tourists to live in a homely environment and to take advantage of the scheme. In addition, efforts will be made to organize short term training in hospitality trade to those who would opt for such training. Ecotourism in Himalayas
Nature worship and the conservation ethic have been an integral part of Indian thought and traditions and its also followed by India's Himalayan neighbours. For centuries, the country has nurtured the philosophy of the oneness of life, the tradition that humankind is a part of nature and one should look upon all creation with the eyes of a friend. It is tragic that in recent years, the mad pursuit for material ends has created in India and elsewhere a situation in which progress has become synonymous with exploitation of nature in all its manifestations. Today the entire Himalayan range, with its rich and unique biological diversity, is facing a deep crisis and is in the danger being destroyed. It is being relentlessly denuded of its rich forest cover. Fortunately, this has been led to some realisation, and now the beginnings of a new awakening about human responsibility towards nature are discernible. Crowing Glory Of Tourism In Himachal Pradesh

Crowing Glory Of Tourism In Himachal Pradesh
Location : Himachal Pradesh
States Comprising The Himalayan Range : Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu And Kashmir, Uttranchal And Darjeeling District Of West Bengal
“The Himalayas”
The Skanda Puranas have held Himalayas and Himachal Pradesh in high esteem and reverence.
“As the due is dried up by the morning sun, so are the sins of mankind by the site of Himachal”. The Himalayas, the youngest, loftiest of all the mountains in the world and embracing seven out of the ten highest peaks, sprawl approximately 2,560-kms from North western to the south eastern along with its extension in North eastern India and has breadth from 250-km to 400-km. States of India namely Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttranchal and Darjeeling district of West Bengal are located in Himalayas. The Himalayan Landscapes
The undulating Himalayas welcome with bottle green shrubbery in the foothills of Shivalik Ranges, crescent shaped, snow clad Dhauladhar over shadowed by the Pir Panjal and the Great Himalayan Ranges. The land is dotted by beautiful lakes and valleys located between an altitude of 350 metres and approximately 6,810 metres, intercepted by rivers and sprawling valleys. The forests, flora and fauna, wild life and natural scenic beauty with salubrious climate is a haven for the visitors. The alpine land, spread over Lahaul and Spiti to Pangi valley, is an ardent destination for Aplinists and a feast of hedonic nature’s bounty. In Himalayas, medicinal herbs have been growing throughout nature kindness from the times immemorial. Adventure sport is another area of tourism activities, which yields greater scope for trekking, camping, mountaineering and skiing, etc. Visiting The Land Of Gods
The fairs and festivals, customs and gatherings attended by the locals represent the unconceited simple disposition and hospitable populace. To visit Himachal, by itself, is an experience of heritage. Himachal is popularly described as “Dev Bhumi”. The temples, churches, Gurdwaras, monasteries besides bearing testimony to the typical pieces of architecture and woodcarving enjoy the international fame. With several spurs and sub system, the Himalayas are a strong spine for the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India. They have also given the area an enormous geographical spectrum - and one that is unparalleled in the world. To sum up, it is truly said,
“A sweeter and a lovelier land,
framed in the prodigality of nature. The spacious world cannot afford to have again.”
The Last Awakening Call
Location : Himalayas Regions
Mountains, forests and pastures are the mothers of rivers that sustain life. Their catchment areas are the water basins for hydel projects and dams. Destroy the forests and one will find dams silting and going dry; hydel projects will remain a dream and drought a common occurrence. Scarcity of water will affect food production and there will be no answer to the frantic cries of the cities and villages for water between individuals, states and nations, and progress adversely affected due to lack of power. Things Effecting Nature
In recent years trees have so badly lopped that they are left only with a crown of green top; herbal collections on massive scales by agents of drug plant owners; uncontrolled grazing by animals; forests set on fire by villagers to get better growth for grazing with no thought for wild animals and birds; fish being electrocuted in mountain streams; large forest areas encroached upon by farmers and tourism developers; forest rest houses demolished by ‘timber looters’; barren, hollowed out hillsides due to mining; murder of the majestic deodars by cutting a hollow at the base of the trunk and then setting it on fire. Land, water and forests resources are being degraded and depleted at a galloping speed. With over-exploitation for agricultural purposes and to meet the ever-increasing demands of the cities, the sub-soil water is receding at an alarming rate. If the rivers too go dry, the holocaust can well be imagined. Deforestation will lead to desertification as is happening in parts of China where the desert sand dunes are spreading at the rate of 200-sq-kms per month. Deforestation
Forests are critical for preserving the green covering on mountain soils. Extensive deforestation and grazing results in barren surface, soil erosion and porosity. The porous soil, during the monsoons and cloud bursts, soaks in water gets loosened and whole mountain sides slide down taking with them trees, farm lands, villages and finally damming the rivers-leaving behind barren scars on the mountains which will further increase erosion. Most vulnerable to this kind of nature’s fury are the run-of-the-river schemes Hydel projects and big gravity dams especially when their catchment areas have been deforested. “Among mountains, I am the Himalaya” (Bhagvat Gita) - this was the pride with which our ancestors and sages looked up to the most beautiful, majestic and mighty snow-capped mountains. Today, however, the same Himalayas are the most degraded mountains in the world - a eco-disaster in the making. Wisdom is required not to plunder but to preserve. It is time to wake up to this “last awakening call”, otherwise we are heading for the Himalayan eco-disaster and with it the “Last Bugle Call”. Major Peak of Himalayn Mountains in India: Kangchenjunga
Himalayan range covers the entire northern part of India, nestling five major states of the country within it. The ancient pilgrims who have travelled in these mountains in India since time immemorial coined a Sanskrit word for the Himalayas meaning “Abode of Snow”. Some of the reasons why people have been so fascinated by the Indian Himalayas is because of the Hindu pilgrim routes, the low valleys that abruptly rise up in high mountain ranges, the lovely trekking hikes, densely forested areas lying just a mountain range away from barren cold deserts, and the lovely people of the mountains in India with their unique hospitable lifestyles. And the possibilities for a whole range of adventure activities is also enormous. There are day-bikes by the thousand, and the trek routes follow trails that last a couple of days - or can extend over a few weeks. These vary from gentle walks over easy terrain, to grueling expeditions. There is skiing, helisking and ice-skating. There is the thrill of paragliding and the test of stamina with mountain cycling. You can go camping and fishing and play golf - or take a safari by car, jeep or on motorcycle. Then there is mountaineering and rock climbing. All you have to do is make up your mind and select your own activity. No special training is required for most things, age is no consideration and all you need is a reasonable level of fitness. Equipment, training and instructors are available. And then all this comes at a fraction of what it would cost elsewhere in the world. Sedentary or strenuous, for the expert or beginner, Himachal has a niche of adventure for everyone. Buddhism In Himachal Pradesh
Buddhism in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh can be traced back to the spread of Buddhism in the early eighth century. Over the centuries this activity has become deeper rooted, particularly in the Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur valleys of Himachal Pradesh. After the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, escaped from Tibet with his followers in 1959 and took refuge in India, the focus on Tibetan Buddhism spread further and attracted immense international sympathy and support. The Dalai Lama found Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh as an ideal place to establish his “capital in exile” at McLeod Ganj in close vicinity to Dharamshala, and is called the Little Lhasa and also as Dhasa (a combination of Dharamshala and Lhasa in Tibet). This situation has given the state a unique status in the global firmament of Buddhist traditions. It is now the cradle of Tibetan Buddhism, with its undeniable link to the past activities initiated in the 8th century (in 747 AD) by Guru Padmasambhava (who went to Tibet from Rewalsar in Himachal Pradesh in North India to spread Buddhism), who was known as the "Guru Rinpoche" and the “Second Buddha. The influence of Buddhism is strong throughout the Trans-Himalayan region or Western Himalayas, formed by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and bounded by the Indus River on the extreme west and the Tons-Yamuna River gorge on the east.[5] With the influx of Tibetan refugees into India, in the last over 50 years (since 1959), popularity and practice of Tibetan Buddhism has been notable. Apart from the original practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism in ancient and medieval India, it is now seriously pursued by Tibetans re-settled at Dharamshala (the nodal centre and the 'capital in exile' of the Dalai Lama were initially re-settled) in Himachal Pradesh, Dehradun (Uttar Pradesh), Kushalnagar (Karnataka), Darjeeling (West Bengal), Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Ladakh. It's the abundant beauty of Himachal that gives its people their character of simplicity and modesty. With thirty-one such areas, Himachal Pradesh has the second largest number of national parks and sanctures in the country
History
The ancient history of Himachal Pradesh like many other region of India is lost in obscurity because of the lack of accurate source material. The First evidence of human civilization in Himachal came in the shape of Palaeolithic tools in kangra and Guler. Himachal history took a major turnaround 3,000-2500B.C. when the Aryans crossed the Ravi as part of their northward expansion. These people moved to the hills of present day Himachal Pradesh. Where they could live peacefully and preserve their way of life According to the Rig-Veda (Sacred Hindu Texts) many human tribes occupied the hills of Himachal and other areas before the arrival of the Aryans. The non-Arayan tribes of the Koles, the Kiratas , the Kinnaras, the Yakshas and the Nagas, lived here prior to the Arayans. Himachal has a history of several princely hill states with areas divided among themselves for cultural and economic reasons. The famous ones have been the princely states of Kangra, Chamba, Bilaspur Kullu & Shimla regions. Many old forts and monuments in Himachal are live example of former Hill states. Other than British invasion armed Gorkhas from neighboring Nepal also try to take control over some regions of Sirmour but later they got evacuated. Climate:
Himachal Pradesh is mostly hilly but some parts are plains and resemble climatic conditions similar to Punjab and Chandigarh regions. Himachal mostly dominated by mountains, rivers, passes and lakes has diversification in the climatic conditions due to variation in elevation. October to February nights and mornings are very chilled in regions of Kullu, Manali, Dharamshala, Shimla, Palampur region. The regions of Lahaul and Spiti & some parts of Kinnaur are completely isolated where there are mountain passes that are blocked by snow. The climatic conditions, therefore, vary from the semi- tropical to semi-artic. Geographical
Himachal Pradesh, is situated in the western Himalayan region of north India. It extends from the latitudes 30°22'40" North to 33°12'40" North and longitudes 75°45' 55" East to 79°04' 20" East. On the northern front the state is bordered by Kashmir and by its west it is bordered by Punjab, Uttar Pradesh in the southeast, China in the east & Haryana in the southeast. The entire state of Himachal has a hilly and rugged terrain, with the altitude ranging from 350 meters to 7000 meters above sea level. The altitude of Himachal Pradesh varies from 350 m to 7000 m above sea level. Famous rivers in Himachal are Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and Chandarbhaga. The physiographic position of Himachal Pradesh can be divided into three zones: 1) Outer Himalayas or the Shivaliks, 2) The inner or the middle Himalayas and 3) The greater Himalayas or Trans Himalayas. The Shivaliks include the districts of Hamirpur, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, and the lower parts of Solan, Sirmaur and Mandi. The inner Himalayas include middle regions of Kullu-Manali, some Dhauladhar regions of Chamba and Kangra region & Shimla hills and Trans Himalayas include high altitude regions of Spiti, Kaza, Kinnaur etc. Languages

Jammu Kashmir is the first Himalayan state of India, but its not another hill land of India. Jammu and Kashmir is really three regions: the foothill plains of Jammu; the lakes and blue valleys of Kashmir rising to alpine passes, the high altitude plains and starkly beautiful mountains of Ladakh, which lies beyond those passes. It's enough to move one to poetry. Among the most attractive part that this Indian state has is the adventure oppurtunities that can be seggragated into trekking, mountaineering and Trans Himalayan Jeep Safari. Kashmir is one of india’s most beautiful and touristically popular regions and has been since the time of the great Moghul emperors. It’s probably most famous for the houseboats on picturesque Dal Lake you’ve not really been to Kashmir until you’ve not really been to Kashmir until you’ve stayed on one - but there’s a lot more to the Kashmir Valley than just lazing on board. Around the capital, Srinagar, there are a number of interesting mosques, temples and forts and, of course, the delightful Moghul Gardens - laid out in formal patterns hundreds of years ago and every bit as beautiful today. But you have to get away from Srinagar, up to the hill stations around the valley, to really enjoy Kashmir. Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg are all delightful in themselves, but they also serve as the jumping off points for Kashmir’s many Trekking possibilities. Jammu, the second largest town in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and is situated 290-km from capital city of Srinagar on the south-eastern slopes of the Shiwalik range. In winter it becomes the headquarters of the Jammu & Kashmir administration and many Kashmiris move here for the winter because the temperature drops. Ladakh
Ladakh's landscape has more in common with the lunar landscape than any other place on earth. Being in a complete rainshadow region, cut off from the monsoon clouds by the Great Himalaya and a host of subsidiary ranges, it is a cold high altitude desert where the wind, water from the minimal winter snows, and chemical reactions within the rocks themselves, have carved a fantastic, sometimes grotesque, landscape. Climate Of Jammu & Kashmir
The climate is one of opposites: while in summer time the heat builds upto breaking point in the foothills, people of Ladakh and Kashmir wait for the snow to melt.on the high passes. From October onwards, Jammu becomes a much more pleasant destination. However, the best time to enjoy vale of Kashmir and the adventures of Ladakh region is between the months of May and September. People And Culture Of Jammu & Kashmir
The majority are Muslims living in the Kashmir valley; culturally and ethnically, the closest links are with peoples in the northwestern highlands of the Gilgit district in the Pakistani sector. While Hindus dominate the Jammu region and Ladakh is majorly influenced by the Trans-Himalayan Buddhism. The Kashmiri language is influenced by Sanskrit and belongs to the Dardic branch of Indo-Aryan languages also spoken by the hill tribes of Gilgit. The great majority of the population resides in the lower reaches of the valley. The ancient caves and temples of Kashmir, reveal a strong link with Indian culture at the beginning of the Christian Era. At one time the classical dances of the south are believed to have been practised. These arts survived only in folk forms and were performed principally at marriage ceremonies. The popular Hafiza dance performed by Kashmiri women to the accompaniment of Sufiana Kalam was later replaced by the Bacha Nagma, performed by young boys dressed like women. The Bhand Jashna or the "festival of clowns", a 300- to 400-year-old genre of Kashmiri folk theatre performed in village squares, satirizes social situations through dance, music and clowning. Adventure Sports In Jammu & Kashmir
In the summer season Kashmir offers a series of a little less rigorous adventure sports, such as Water Skiing, on Srinagar's Dal and Nagin Lakes, a popular part time in the valley. Water trekking is calculated to delight anyone wanting to explore the valley in a boat. A Gondala, locally known as Shikara, takes sightseers along a five-day route along rivers and lakes situated within the valley. Enjoy spending nights camping along the way. Trout fishing is another delightful water sport in Kashmir and fishing season lasts all through summer. What can make a mountaineering expedition, an adventure one could never forget? If its done on the glaciers that are still craving to be explored. The Himalayan range offers some of the most rigorous mountaineering challenges one can ever come across. The glaciers of Ladakh and Kashmir regions can test one's survival to the fittest and most testing of them all is the Siachen glacier, known as the largest glacier outside the Polar Regions. Ladakh: is surely the most adventurous travelling place in the world today. It has extensive possibilities of highland treks and challenging climbing. We at WAYMARK ADVENTURES offer trekking program's from five days to one month. One can make his choice, and trek in the valleys of Zanskar or Stok Kangri or Markha or Rupshu and many more trekking program's will be forwarded by us on request
