We were drawn as if by magic to this colourful spice shop called FOTSI in a lane near the Municipal Market in Athens. The name comes from the founder of this business Fotios Tsironis (FoTsi) who having lost his father at an early age had to leave school to support his mother and sisters. He worked at a market shop, then was an ambulant merchant who sold baby foods and groceries and finally started importing spices to be sold in Greece. At 22 years of age he opened his first shop in Agiou Dimitriou street, in Psiri. The business was then taken forward by his son-in-law Elias Bertsatos and is currently managed by the third generation George Bertsatos. Garlands of dried vegetables, spices, herbs, teas and infusions makes this shop is curious stop for all who love an visual and olfactory experience.

No ordinary chicken tikka this! Tucked away in a street in neighborhood that houses Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi hair cutting salons, electronic shops and take away eateries PAK TAK A TAK is a great value for money place. The biryani was aromatic along with the Dahi n mint chutney and a Cucumber tomato n onion salad. The chicken achari was delicious served with two large Khameeri Tandoori Rotis. The chicken tikka was well marinated and seasoned and delectable.

Tirokafteri is a feta dip that’s peach in color thanks to red pepper that it’s blended with. It’s spicy because of the chilly flakes and flavoured with garlic olive oil n herbs. The texture is coarse. The creaminess comes from some strained yoghurt.

At Palekastritsa is a Byzantine Monastery atop a hill that overlooks the cerulean Aegean Sea. The monastery dates back to 1228, though the cells of the monks and the adjoining garden space are from the 18th century. Rare Byzantine icons, holy books, and other relics are housed in small museum in the monastery. There is also a traditional olive oil press here.

The ascend although a little circuitous is a lovely experience.

Here were are at the Loutraki Perchora municipality in Greece. The historical Corinth Canal is a 4 mile long waterway allowing only smaller ships to pass through its narrow width. Cut into the isthmus this canal was completed in 1893 and is on the partial border between the Corinthian Community and the Loutraki-Perachora Community. One can even go Bungy Jumping here.
