Hanseswari Temple at Bansberia is one of the hidden gems of Bengal. Completed in 1814, this unique piece of architecture makes use of thirteen tall minarets, each shaped like a lotus at the top. From certain angles it might remind you of a medieval castle, like the castle of Agrabah from the old Aladdin movie. But let not the outlandish look deceive you, for the architecture is said to imitate the human body as described in Ta***ic texts, and the temple still remains an important centre of Shaktiism.

Rastrapati Niwas or Indian Institute Advanced Study (IIAS), formerly known as Viceregal Lodge & Botanical Garden, is situated on the Observatory Hills of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. It was formerly the residence of British Viceroy of India (1888-1946), Lord Dufferin being it's first tenant. The house was designed by the architect Henry Irwin who had also designed the famous Mysore Palace. The second president of independent India handed this Mansion over to the ministry of education.
The structure reminds one of Castles from Scottish Highlands & English Renaissance architecture. Presently it houses some important photographs which dated back to British Raj in India.

The Pushkar Lake is too famous to need any introduction. What caught my attention during my visit was the heavily concretized aspect of the waterbody which I think is a major polluting factor. Also look at the denuded hills that form the backdrop, evidence that the area has seen large scale deforestation over the years. I wish we were a little more sensitive about our environmental heritage.

Free dissemination of knowledge and organized religion rarely go hand in hand, the Head and the Heart have always been at war. Interestingly, in Shimla the Church and the public library stand just across the road, like old buddies from the colonial times.

As difficult to access, as it is beautiful, the Sangestar Tso lake, popularly known as Madhuri lake (named after Madhuri Dixit after the shooting of the film Koyela), situated close to the Sino-Indian border in Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh. His Highness the Dalai Lama passed by it while escaping from Tibet into India. This is really as close to Paradise as you can get in this earthly life.

As Carl Sagan has put it, mankind has been wanderers since the very beginning. Wanderlust is something which is coded into the very genes of our species. It is a deep, primal urge. Travel keeps me alert and engaged. The very thought of a tour planned helps me get through trying times.I guess I would vegetate if I stopped travelling.

As every day keep getting longer and hotter, plains people must be aching to get away to the hills. But during these lockdown days all we can do is dream and imagine. Here are two pictures taken during my 2018 trip to Mussoorie. The one in colour attempts to catch the glory of the idyllic hills while the B&W one records how the town is a blend of the Colonial and chaotic modern elements.

Royal Splendour at its best.Done in red and gold and purple, mostly gold, this room is apparently meant for leisurely chatting. What is remarkable is the distance between the seats--looks like the Jodhpur Maharajas practised a fair degree of Social Distancing. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur.

This world belongs as much to other animals as it belongs to mankind. Here in the 2nd picture, on my palm, trustfully rests a newly hatched turtle. The picure was taken at Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery in Srilanka, where one can come in close contact with these adorable creatures.

Mahrangarh Fort, (Jodhpur) best known for its magnificent architecture, unbreakable walls and complex carvings, is one of the mighty forts in Rajasthan, India. There is no wonder in Rudyard Kipling described the fort as "A Palace that might have been built by Titans and colored by the morning sun". It's name derived from "Mehr" Means "Sun" and "Garh" and this place is also known as suncity. Although started by Rao Jodha in the 15th century, it took almost 500 years to finish this gigantic fort.

Here is a video of the famous ladyboys performing at Alcazar Cabaret, Pattaya to a popular Hindi number from the movie Welcome to Karachi. I had heard a lot about these 'ladyboys'--transvestites, but with a twist. They are highly feminine and sexually attractive. At the Alcazar, which is one of the two most upmarket cabarets in Pattaya, hundreds of them put up a number of themed seventy-minute shows every day. I was pleasantly surprised to find the ladies on stage extremely graceful and elegant. The choreography, the costumes, the feline grace with which the dancers moved--it was a real treat for the senses. Yes I prefer calling them ladies rather than ladyboys, a tag that I feel demeans them.
