There is a lot to see and do in and outside Siracusa. Nature reserves, volcanos, archaelogical sights and wineyards are just a small part. If you don't rent a car, some places are difficult to reach with public transport so a great choice is to hire a guide! We collaborate with some of our talented friends here in Siracusa; each one of them let you discover a part of the amazing Sicilian nature and culture, in italian or english.

🌋 The other day I went on a tour on Etna with our friend and naturalistic guide Francesco Corbino My Siracusa - Tour & Experience and our russian guests at Casa Alba. With 48°C in the city of Siracusa we hoped to get some fresh air on top of the volcano. We got some fresher air and a very windy but interesting 4 km trekking uphill on lava sand and craters. After spectacular views, history, flora and fauna, we went to Ragalna for a wine tasting with local apetizers.

Francescos specialty is the nature of Sicily, from nature reserves and salt lakes with flamingos to volcanos and canyons combined with local food, wine or beer tasting.
If you are interested contact directly Francesco or Casa Alba in private and we will help you get more out of your stay in Siracusa😉

🏖 Siracusa city doesn't have sandy beaches, you can find them only outside from Punta del Pero (10 min by car) and going south. BUT there are a lot of spots around Siracusa, and Ortigia, where you can take a swim from natural rocks or big wooden decks (from June until September/October) that are private or have free access for everyone. Close to Casa Alba you have 2 solutions:
- the closest access is 150 m away, just a short walk for a refreshing swim in the morning. Towels and an umbrella are available at the appartment.
- The other one is 400m away, but private, so you need to book in advance to get sunbeds and umbrella. They also serve breakfast and lunch, and in the same building there is also a resturant with a lovely terrace open in the evening.
Don't worry about the heat, you will always find a place where to cool off 😊

Spring is here and we have two new entries at Casa Alba for this new season:

• a comfortable and brightly yellow sofa (sofabed!) to use for lazy mornings or for catching up on some series on Netflix before going to bed
• a small table with 2 chairs on the front balcony where to sit and enjoy the afternoon sun, sipping on a glass of wine and hearing the sound of the waves

We are working on making your stay as relaxing and comfortable as possible! Stay tuned!

We have added a few things at Casa Alba...

🏠 At the entrance desk you will find a short list with some guidelines we ask you to respect during your stay. And on the back of the door some important information about the waste sorting; how, where, when. Please read it carefully!

☕️🫖 In the kitchen we have created a breakfast corner with coffe, tea and sugar, a moka and a coffee press, an electric kettle and a microwave owen.

📚 Next to the television you will find a "miniature library" with books in italian, english and swedish, all second hand. Feel free to: bring a book to the beach, read it on the train, take it home with you, leave one of your old books...

🥾 We also collaborate with Francesco, a naturalistic guide, for tours in Fonte Ciane, Pantalica, Cavagrande, Noto Antica, Vendicari, Etna, wineyards and other beautiful places. If you prefer a private walking (or by bike!) tour of Siracusa/Ortigia and Noto you can book Enrica that works as a guide and archaeologist. Both available in english and italian. For a tour in the city there is also a swedish local guide. Just PM for information.

Siracusa is full of markets where they sell fresh fruit and vegetables cultivated close by or in another part of the island. You can find exotic items like avocados and mangos, lovely locally produced oranges, lemons, cherry tomatoes, almonds, sundried tomatoes, capers... Usually there are also local dairies selling sicilian cheese like ricotta, provola and primo sale, and local fishermen selling their catch of the day. You can smell the perfume of roasted peppers, get an injection of vitamin C just looking at the mapo (see foto!), and see the local habitants searching for the best price and quality.
Here's a list of the weekly markets around the city:

🥑Mercato di Ortigia/Via Emanuele de Benedictis
Monday-Sunday

🍓Fiera del Mercoledì/Wednesday Fair- also with textiles, clothes, shoes, souvenirs etc
Only Wednesdays

🍊Mercato del Contadino/Farmers Market
Fridays in Piazza Adda
Satudays in Piazza Ernesto Cosenza (Pizzuta, north Siracusa)
Sundays in the end of the market in Ortigia

🍋Piazza Santa Lucia - market also with antiques/second hand
Only Sundays

The markets are open early morning until lunch time/1 pm

If you can't reach the different markets by foot, rent a bike to reach the ones further away. It's a great way to see the city and also a sustainable way to get around. The bike lane to Ortigia passes by in via Unità d'Italia, only a few meters from Casa Alba. There's also a bike rental 450m north, at the Monumenti dei Caduti.

Also in Sicily the autumn is arriving; fresh air, clear blue sky and the temperature is still over 25 °C. The local people already think it's getting cold while the turists can enjoy the city without sweating.
From now, some days can be a bit rainy and cloudy so what is there to do in Siracusa on a grey day? If you are interested in architecture you could do a visit to

• (photo n° 1: up in the left corner)
The "Santuario La madonna delle Lacrime". A modern sanctuary made by two french architects from 1966 until 1994! You can se it almost from every part of town with it's height of 103 mt and questionable architecture. But what does it represent? 🤔

• (Photo n°2)
The "Church of San Giovanni" is a beautiful ancient church with a labirint of catacombs and tombs underground. Eventhough it's without a ceeling it's still a church and commonly used for wedding ceremonies.

• (Photo n°1: below the Sanctuary)
The "Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi" is one of the most important archaeological museums in Europe with it's enormous quantity of archaeological finds that were donated from a private collection. 20 000 mq of Sicilian history and 2-3 hours (if not more) of visit in a most curious building and atmosphere...

All three of them are close to eachother and are situated just a 15 min walk from Casa Alba.

Enjoy!

A warm welcome to Southeast Sicily and Casa Alba Siracusa!

Our appartment is situated in a part of the city called Riviera Dionisio, on the coast of Siracusa and only a 15 min walk from the island of Ortigia.
It's a calm neighbourhood, where you can find many local people and a genuin sicilian everyday life. In this part of town there is everything you need. At a close distance you can find:
• parking outside the appartment or nearby, free of charge
• free access to the sea (flat rocks) for a morning dip (150mt)
• a sun deck with sun beds and umbrellas (250mt) (only during the summer months, on payment)
• resturants/pizzeria/bars (250-400mt)
• bike rental (400mt) (the bikelane passes right across the street from Casa Alba)
• bus stop right across the street
• supermarket (800mt)
• a 7 km naturalistic path along the coast for a refreshing morning run, a bike ride, an evening walk... (400mt)
• Piazza Santa Lucia with it's beautiful square, church and Caravaggio painting inside, and the famous Sunday market with fresh fruit and vegetables and second hand/antiques

And there is much much more to discover! Ps. In the end of our street you can watch the sun rise over the sea🌅
