We love East Hokkaido, and we specifically love to visit Teshikaga area (that includes Lake Kussharo, Lake Mashu, Mount Io, and more) lots in every season 😍

Snowshoeing at Lake Mashu and taking pictures of the swans at Sunayu in winter - through to enjoying local hiking trails in summer - through to outdoor onsens and camping under the changing leaves in early autumn - so many great memories and things to look forward too.

Teshikaga area recently redid their website so that it’s now really easy for travelers to get up to date and accurate information, and you can check this out at https://visit-teshikaga.com/en/

Let’s travel Hokkaido together 🤗

My final collection of pictures from our experiences with the team at 🥰

There were two other great elements to our time in Lake Akan which I want to highlight: embroidery and wood carving. In both of these workshops, the focus is learning about Ainu patterns - which are often inspired and based on the forms and shapes found in nature.

Although I paint and felt a bit of familiarity with wood craft, embroidery is something that has always been way out of my comfort zone. But I love the Ainu designs that you see displayed on clothing and jewelry throughout Hokkaido, and our teacher Nishida-san was one of the most patient and guiding people I’ve ever met. It felt like a real achievement when we could create a simple design for ourselves - despite us crying ‘help us sensei!’ every few minutes! 😂

We’re all really hoping that international travel is going to become a bit more accessible in 2022, and I really hope you consider adding Lake Akan to your itinerary. It’s one of our favorite spots in all seasons.

Mukkuri making with 💪🥰

Have you ever seen or heard this small instrument? It’s called a Mukkuri and it’s a plucked mouth harp indigenous to Hokkaido’s Ainu people.

It’s made from bamboo and the sound is made by pulling the string and vibrating the reed against your mouth…. And it’s A LOT harder than it looks! The sound is so unique, and you can really appreciate how Ainu music expresses the sounds of nature, and is so distinct from anything else you might have heard.

I’ve been visiting Lake Akan for a number of years now, so I’ve heard mukkuri performances, but this was my first attempt at crafting and playing for myself… It gives you a whole new respect for the Ainu musicians who share their songs with you.

The last couple of days we’ve been in Lake Akan area taking part in some amazing Ainu cultural experiences with the team at Anytime Ainutime.

I’ll be sharing a bit more about this over the next few posts, but to begin, let me share the stunning autumn views of Lake Akan, which I think explain for themselves why it should be a must on your Hokkaido fall travel list! 🤤😍

We did a forest hike with Ainu guide Takiguchi-san (who speaks amazing English too), and I was really moved by the knowledge he shared and the love and sense of balance he had for guiding in the forest. Definitely a wonderful way to get a deeper appreciation for the area outside of the regular tourist check-list! 🍂😊

It’s just starting to feel like autumn here in Hokkaido, but just as the leaves are starting to change, it’s prime kokia bush season! 😍😍

This was at Yuni Garden today, and it’s a recommended spot to add to your autumn wish list!

So when invited us to stay at one of their properties this weekend, we thought it would be a good chance to refresh and chill with the kids after a bit of a hectic season with ☺️

We were lucky with a perfect mix of snow and sun, which meant we could enjoy a combination of food and activities - and Luca could rock his first real ski lesson (post coming later!)

We were based at a 2 bed apartment in - central to everything in Hirafu and pretty much the most convenient location we could ask for.

We’ve ran some bus services with Nisade for a couple of years, so we have dropped off and picked up countless guests from these hotels, but never actually stayed 😅, (so I feel like I can honestly give you a good review now 😆)

The apartment was a perfect size for a family of 4 - 2 king size bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen with full oven, dishwasher and large fridge freezer, and a bathtub Luca called his ‘swimming pool’. Perhaps the geekiest thing I was excited about as a Mum was that we had our own washer and drier (if you’ve got kids you KNOW!) and the hotel provided high chairs and whatever else we needed for the boys.

Friendly English speaking staff, and all around good facilities. Swipe for some pictures 👉

also have a bunch of different accommodation options throughout Hokkaido at different price points, so it’s worth checking them out if you’re at the travel planning stage. ✌️

(This isn’t a paid partnership, but we were gifted this stay. However, all comments are completely honest and our own ☺️)

The main snow festival might not be happening in Sapporo this year, but we’re still enjoying the Hokkaido season. Shikotsu Ice Festival is scaled down (with no fireworks and activities) but it’s still an awesome day out from the city ❄️💕

We are a team who believe in what we do.

Our team are all based in Hokkaido, and absolutely love this area of Japan. We believe that this island is the perfect combination of modern cities, spectacular nature, delicious food and exciting activities for every age and interest.

We’re backpackers by experience.

We run hostels here in Sapporo, and we love the vibrancy of staying in community and meeting new people. We love events, fun, music, the great outdoors and bringing people together in it all.

We love learning.
