Mwafunja Caves-Taita

Deep in the heart of Taita Taveta lies a secret treasure of history of the Mwanda people.
This is in form of Mwafunja cave which contains thousands of skulls preserved for the purpose of appeasing the ancestors in case of a calamity.

The caves were named Mwafunja since the first man whose skull was placed inside the cave was called Mwafunja.
Mwafunja has three large caves with the first one consisting of skulls belonging to the former Mwanda community heroes.

The second cave and the third cave belong to community members who were regarded as very respectable in the Mwanda community when they were alive
To the locals, Mwafunja caves symbolise a sacred place where skulls of people considered to be powerful before they died are placed.

For visitors to view the skulls, elders have to bring along a goat and traditional liquor.

They later have to slaughter the goat and check the intestines which would determine whether they can go inside the caves or not.
