Sammaki

Sammaki Sammaki Gallery opened in May 2011 as Battambang’s first independent artist run, not for profit community art space.

Battambang is home to more artists per capita than any other Cambodian city. It’s also home to one of Cambodia’s two art schools, Phare Ponleu Selpak and until Sammaki opened there was nowhere for local artists to exhibit and meet, outside of their school. Sammaki plays an important role for the local artists as a bridge between art school and life as a professional artist. It allows the artists t

o experiment, hone their skills and receive feed back from their teachers, peers and the public in a local setting. It also gives them valuable experience in learning how galleries and the art market work. Participating artists are all encouraged to be fully involved in all aspects of preparing their works for exhibition, including media, marketing, curating etc…

It has been a host venue for various festivals and events such as The Angkor Art Explo 2011 and Interfilm short film festival, it has presented film screenings, workshops and presentations from international artists, film makers and photographers. Sammaki also provides a free space for and encourages artists to make presentations, workshops and artists talks, or use the space to rehearse or otherwise create in.

Photographs from our latest workshop in Lvea where we discussed the recent heat wave, which, together with deforestation and other human impacts, is causing many animals to die throughout Cambodia. The kids drew a monkey and wrote about why it is important to protect our wildlife.

Of course, to have some fun too, we made paper flowers!

When Sammaki opened it’s door 5 years we were the first art gallery in Battambang and one of the only artist-run art spaces in the country. Over the past five years Sammaki has helped kickstart a lot art initiatives - we have housed over 30 artist workshops, 40 exhibitions, and provided a community space for artists to converge for exciting projects like Our City, Angkor Art Explo, and Cambodian Mask Project. Since our opening, and in part because of our work, fantastic new galleries like Sangker, Tep Kao Sol, and Romcheik Pram have opened their doors, as well as many mixed-art spaces like Choco L'Art Cafe, Lotus, Marine Ky's studio, Kinyei, and more. We are proud of the important role Sammaki has played in growing Battambang's reputation in the national and international art scene, but it's time to move on. Sammaki may continue to host workshops and events in the future, but the doors and space as such, will close. We wish to invite any and all members of the Battambang arts community to come to Sammaki February 13th at 11am to meet and discuss the transition as well as the future of the building, and Battambang's arts scene. You are the community Sammaki has nurtured and worked with for five years, and Sammaki wants to offer you the building, to continue your own exciting and new art projects. It is a large financial responsibility to run a space, but we know new spaces will undoubtedly take Sammaki's place. We wish to thank everyone who has been involved in Sammaki over the years, you know who you are! Without you none of this could have happened. We hope and believe that the idea of Sammaki, the unity for the arts we nurtured, has come to fruition. We can see that looking at all the new spaces that have popped up since. We look forward to seeing all that the Battambang arts community has in store. Thanks everyone for your support, work, and participation.

Sincerely:
