Kande Viharaya Temple
Kande Viharaya, Aluthgama, boasts a commanding presence, with a colossal Buddha statue that greets visitors upon their approach. This 160-foot-tall Buddha, seated in a cross-legged posture, is believed to be one of the world's tallest, situated within an 18th-century hilltop temple.
Nestled in the town of Bentota, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Mirissa, Kande Viharaya makes for an ideal day trip destination. While Bentota is renowned as Sri Lanka's hub for watersports enthusiasts, the temple offers a serene contrast. It's essential to show respect for its religious significance by dressing modestly, covering your shoulders and knees when on the temple grounds.
The temple's history dates back to its discovery in 1734, and it has since become a revered site for worshippers. Kande Viharaya is known as one of the most sacred temples on the island. Within its sacred premises, you can explore a Stupa, a 300-year-old Bodhi Tree gracing the garden, a Relic Chamber, which is the oldest structure on the sacred site, and other temples such as Upulvan Devalaya, Kataragama, and Pattini Devalaya.

Independence Square
Independence Memorial Hall, also known as Independence Commemoration Hall, stands as a national monument in Sri Lanka. This significant structure was erected to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from British colonial rule and the restoration of full governing authority to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on February 4, 1948. You can find this historic monument situated within Independence Square, formerly known as Torrington Square, nestled in the heart of Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. Moreover, it proudly hosts the Independence Memorial Museum.
This iconic monument occupies the very spot where the formal ceremony marking the initiation of self-governance took place. On February 4, 1948, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, presided over the historic event, which saw the inauguration of the first parliament at a specially designated podium.

Lahugala National Park
Lahugala National Park Sri Lanka
Lahugala Kitulana National Park is considered as one of the smaller national parks in Sri Lanka. Officially declared so on 1st October 1980, this park encloses the Lahugala, Kitulana and Sengamuwa reservoirs within its land area, whose waters flow into the Heda Oya. Despite its size, this park is a must-visit for elephant and bird enthusiasts. Renowned for its vast congregation of elephants (around 150), July and August are the best months to visit, as then the elephants gather around the Lahugala Tank, which is their only source of water during those months – the rest of the park’s water dries up..

Lakegala
Lakegala is a renowned hiking destination cherished by hikers in Sri Lanka. It has captured the imagination of local hikers as a dream hike, thanks to its challenging terrain and distinctive mountain shape. Situated within the Knuckles range, near the well-known Meemure Village, this peak offers an exhilarating adventure.
.
The final kilometer of the hike presents a demanding ascent that necessitates the use of safety ropes. While it is awe-inspiring to witness some individuals conquer this hike without proper safety equipment, it is highly recommended to exercise caution and employ the appropriate ropes.

Buddhangala Monastery
The Buddangala monastery, a Buddhist meditation center that is almost 2300 years old, is nestled within a dense jungle teeming with wild elephants and leopards. The rock face of the monastery features Brahmi letter inscriptions that detail the construction of the temple under the guidance of Princess Chitra and the supervision of her accountant. The monastery was continuously maintained by the Sangha tradition until 800 AD, but was later abandoned due to Kingdom shifts and South Indian Invasions. For over a millennium, it lay forgotten amidst the encroaching jungle and was left for the elephants to roam. It wasn't until 1964 that the monastery was rediscovered and reestablished for meditating monks.
The new stupa of the hermitage stands atop a 500-feet-tall hill and houses the relics of Lord Buddha and his two main disciples, Arhant Sariputta and Arhant Moggallana, which were discovered on-site during the excavation of a stupa. This unique and highly revered combination of relics is cherished by many Buddhists in the country.
Despite an increase in travelers to Ampara following the end of the civil war that plagued the East coast of the country for the past two decades, the Buddangala monastery remains hidden within the jungle, a forest hermitage steeped in ancient tradition.
