Traditional Paddy Harvesting

Sri Lankan traditional paddy cultivation goes back to thousands of years. Since rice became the staple food of Sri Lanka, and as such paddy cultivation was given utmost importance in lives of the people that it created a new culture and tradition of them. A new way of life based on the paddy cultivation as well as the nature of around was created as an aesthetic sub culture.
We are very happy to inform that we are going to present an opportunity for tourists to participate lively with a traditional paddy harvesting event to collect unforgettable experiences.
Harvesting paddy (Goyam kapeema - ගොයම් කැපීම)
Harvesting paddy by a group of women in traditional outfits (Redda Hatte - රෙද්ද හා හැට්ටය). Folk songs (Goyam kavi - ගොයම් කවි) are sung by a group of ladies while harvesting.
Anybody who prefers to get personal experience has a chance to participate.
Threshing the paddy (Goyam pagima - ගොයම් පෑගීම)
After reaping the paddy, farmers gather the crop into the threshing floor (කමත) and initiate to thresh the harvest. You can lively have experience how farmers separate the seeds from the bunch of paddies using their legs with the support of raft (වාරැ දන්ඩ). This event can be only seen in down south will be a new utmost experience for you.
Fanning the paddy (Hulan gaseema - හුලන් ගැසීම)
Fanning paddy with the aid of wind in the threshing floor is an unseen event in current harvesting process. It goes back to past that traditional farmer was used to fan the paddy in the wind before fetching the harvest to his place. This event is done by two farmers using mats and winnowing fan (කුල්ල).
Measuring the paddy (Batha maneema - බැත මැනීම)
The ancient farmer considered measuring paddy as a sacred event that took place in the threshing floor itself. Through this event you can educate how our traditional farmers measure the paddy using the ancient measuring artifacts (වී කුරැණිය).
Lunch (ඇඹුල)
Having the ambula (ඇඹුල) in the paddy field is another interesting part of the day bringing by the ladies (ගමමහගෙ) to the threshing floor will be a feast. The traditional lunch (ඇඹුල) is served to feast sitting on the mats under the shades of the trees, singing poems and chatting with each other.
