Handicrafts 🪡⚒️ in Sri Lanka🇱🇰

Sri Lankan handicrafts have a long history. In the past, these handicrafts were created to fulfill the needs of everyday life, from royalty to ordinary villagers.

"Sesath" is the most regal and majestic element of Sri Lanka's traditional handicrafts. These were actually used as sun-shades for nobles. Sesath consists of a colourful circular fan attached to a long lacquered handle.

Traditional "Laksha" crafts or lacquer works are also a part of Sri Lankan craftsmanship. These creations, which are made using very simple tools and colors found in the natural environment, will surely amaze you.

When you go to the world famous Sigiriya, you will see the ladies in frescos were bedecked in gold and precious stones. So Sri Lankans have a long tradition of gold and silver smithy. Even today there are many who are still engaged in the production of traditional jewellery.

"Dumbara rata mats" are traditional handwoven textiles from Sri Lanka, particularly associated with the Dumbara Valley in the Kandy District. These mats, known for their intricate designs and unique weaving techniques, are crafted from natural fibers like hana (a type of reed) and dyed using natural, plant-based colors.

Handicrafts are popular today because of their environmental friendliness and the fact that purchasing them empowers rural communities. Join with us; Hey lanka travels to explore these unique Sri Lankan traditional authentic craftsmen and take an experience as local.

The largest animal to ever live on Earth is the magnificent and iconic blue whale. The elusive blue whale, twice the weight of the hugest known dinosaur. Sri Lanka has been identified as one of the best places to see blue whales.

Did you know that blue whales found in the northern Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka are non-migratory and are believed to reside in these waters year-round?
But blue whales typically undertake the longest migrations of any mammal on Earth. Each year, their migrations span thousands of miles/kilometers between rich feeding grounds in the polar regions and spawning grounds in tropical waters.

This animal reaches lengths of around 110 feet, or 33 metres, and weighs at least 209 tonnes, or 190 tonnes. It means that a typical blue whale is half the length of a football field and just about 20 feet longer than a professional NBA court.

But what could be the reasons why blue whales living in the deep seas around Sri Lanka do not exhibit such a migratory lifestyle?

Because of its size, speed, and power, the blue whale has virtually no natural predators in the ocean. However, despite how huge this animal measures and weighs, it remains completely harmless to humans.

Join us for an unforgettable whale watching experience in Sri Lanka to see how blue whales adapt to Sri Lankan deep oceans.

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is one of the nine recognized leopard subspecies in the world, and this leopard subspecies is native to Sri Lanka. and it is one of two surviving island leopards in the world. And they are the largest leopard subspecies in the world.

Since 2020, the Sri Lankan leopard has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, as the population is estimated at less than 800 mature individuals. In Sri Lanka rare black leopards have been recorded too. Experts believe that among this leopard population three to four percent are black leopards.

Sri Lanka has the highest density of leopards in Asia. So today Sri Lanka has become one of the best leopard viewing destinations in the world.

Leopards are apex predators in Sri Lanka. An apex predator is at the very top of a food web, with no natural predators of its own. As an apex predator, Leopards are ecologically important in Sri Lanka. Without them, sambur, deer and wild boar populations will increase uncontrollably and eat up all the natural vegetation, in addition to our crops. Most of the time, leopards stay in open areas for hunting, so an experienced tour guide can easily provide you with an opportunity to observe leopards.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝙏𝙚𝙖 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣 🍃 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 ..

There is a strong interrelationship between Ceylon tea and railways in Sri Lanka.

In 1867, James Taylor marked the birth of the tea industry in Ceylon by starting a tea plantation in the Loolecondera estate in Kandy.
In 1872 Taylor began operating a fully equipped tea factory there. In 1873, the first shipment of Ceylon tea, a consignment of some 23 lb (10 kg), arrived in London. Soon enough plantations surrounding Loolecondera, began switching over to tea and were among the first tea estates to be established on the island.

Meanwhile, the British needed a reliable and dynamic route to bring their plantation produce to the port of Colombo. The country's first railway line was operational in 1864 from Colombo to Ambepussa. In 1867, the railway line was extended to Kandy, the mid-country.After that, the railway line was extended in 1885 to Nanuoya in the central highlands and in 1895 to Bandarawela. Then the railway line was completed by 1924 to Badulla through the nine-arched Ella bridge, which is extremely popular among tourists at present.

The original idea of building the railway was to transport goods from plantations, mostly tea. Today, among many tourists, this beautiful train journey has become a journey that should be experienced at least once in their lifetime.

In the investigation of Sri Lanka's biodiversity history , one of the most tragic events that cannot be forgotten is the destruction of biodiversity by the British in 1918 in Uva province. It is mentioned in historical documents how the invaders set fire not only to their fertile farmlands but also to the whole area to suppress the Uva people.

In the two centuries after 1818, one species of bird that has spread again with the regrowth of its forests is unique. Because you can only see this subspecies in this regenerated forest area (only in uva area).

This unique bird belongs to Painted Partridge (Painted Francolin) family. And The Sri Lankan subspecie is watsoni, (Francolinus pictus watsoni).
They are easily detected by their loud calls especially during the breeding season.
It can be confused only with the black francolin with which it partly overlaps and is said to sometimes hybridize. This species can be told apart from a black francolin female by the lack of a rufous hind collar and the white spots on the underside. The face is rufous and there is no dark stripe running behind the eye.
The species interbreeds with the black francolin along its northern and appears similar to the female of that species but has no rufous hindcollar, instead having a bright rufous face and throat. The underside has white spots while the legs are orange-yellow to red. It is more arboreal in its habits than the black francolin. The legs of both sexes have no spurs.
They feed on grass seeds (including Brachiaria ramosa) as well as grains of cultivated rice. Beetles and other insects are also eaten. They also feed on the tuberous roots.

We proudly present to you the details of an excellent sculpture created on the island of Sri Lanka centuries before the creation of artists like Michelangelo who created great sculptures in the Renaissance period. According to archaeological dating, this statue was created in the 9th century AD.

It was founded in a Buddhist temple which is located 25 km from the sacred city Anuradhapura, which was the first capital of Sri Lanka. The statue is made of gilt bronze – solid cast – and the height is 49.8 cm. It is solidly cast into the “Lalitasana” and “Rajalilasana” (royal ease) seating position. Further, the right hand displays the “katakahasta mudra”.

The Bodhisattva’s hair is in loose locks and depicts an elaborately plaited “jatamakuta” (headdress) inserted with precious stones and has a Dhyani Buddha symbol on it. The perfectly modelled body looks graceful and it is well dressed in simple ascetic attire. The eyes are made out with precious stones.

The masterpiece of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara reflects a compassionate nature and it is unique in all Buddhist art traditions around the world.

A country's endemic species population is an important factor in measuring its biodiversity. Being an isolated island for thousands of years, Sri Lanka has a rich biodiversity.

In terms of biodiversity, birds are a part of the organisms that beautify the environment and have a high contribution to plant propagation.
Sri Lanka is one of the top destinations for birdwatchers.

You can experience different ecosystems within a relatively short distance on this island. It is also possible to observe the different species of birds living in those different ecosystems as well as the different behaviors of the same birds adapted to their respective ecosystems.
Coming to observe the thirty-four endemic bird species, you can also experience the uniqueness of more than a thousand plant species in Sri Lanka, where their lifestyles are spent.

All these things have made Sri Lanka one of the few biodiversity hotspots in the world.

Most of the Ancient Sri Lankan Kingdoms were located in the dry zone of the island. In the dry zone of this country receives rain only during a certain period of the year. So to fulfil the water needs of the people ancient Sri Lankan kings helped to develop a great water technology which included irrigation canals, tanks, anicuts and ponds.

Apart from that, amazing water gardens or amusement parks were built for the Royal kings. The gardens were designed for royalty to relax or play. According to the Mahavamsa, the first water park, Mahamewuna, was built around 250-210 BC. And the world famous Sigiriya water garden was constructed in the 5th century AD. But it had later been overgrown with wild and lately it was rediscovered by modern archaeologists such as H.C.P. Bell and Senarath Paranavithana.

These water gardens are constructed of a well- planned system by beautifying the gardens with drains, ponds and water fountains. And they have built pleasant environments with cabins, pavilions, resting places and beautifully grown plants and trees.

Buddhism is not merely a religion here in Sri Lanka, it is also a whole civilization with its historical background, its literature, arts, the philosophy, its institutions, social, pololitical and ethical and its code of moral conduct.

Buddhism was first brought to Sri Lanka by a mission sent out from eastern India during the reign of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka ( 273–232 BC). The leader of the mission to Sri Lanka, Mahendra (Mahinda), is described as Ashoka's son. Here it flourishes up to this day, its purity hardly affected by the vicissitudes of twenty five centuries. Today almost 70% of Sri Lankans are buddhists.

The Buddhist monastery was everywhere the centre of education and learning. Wherever it went, Buddhism enriched the language and literature, both of prose and poetry. Its achievements in the fine arts have been no less significant. The paintings and sculptures in the cave temples of Dambulla and Degaldoruwa command our awe and admiration. Some of the Buddhist statues, for example those in Anduradhapura and Polonnaruwa are unrivalled in their majesty.

But greater than all these triumphs was the influence Buddhism exercised in moulding the character of the people who became its followers. It instilled into them its noble ideas of peace and gentleness, tolerance, kindness and Hospitality and compassion towards all that lives and breathes.

As a foreign tourist, you too can be a part of Buddhist meditation 🧘 classes here in Sri Lanka. You can practice meditations such as meditation on breathing (anapana sati) and compassion meditation (metta). We hope these meditations will help you slow down your life and bring you inner peace.

As a biodiversity hot spot in the world, Sri Lanka has more than 1000 endemic plant species. Along with other native plant communities, you'll be able to see these rainbow-hued canopies of the trees. At the same time, it will be a new experience for you to see the charming branches of flowering plants being filled with flowers.

And this is also the breeding season for many endemic and local wildlife (especially birds and butterflies) so you can see more animals than at other times.

So we are waiting for you to come to Sri Lanka this spring to experience the natural beauty that you have never seen before.

Flamingos are very noisy birds. Their flock consists of hundreds of birds.

Insects, aquatic invertebrates and small fish are the main diet of flamingos. And there are plenty of foods suitable for these birds in Sri Lanka.
Do you know that some of these migratory birds, fascinated by their taste, delay their return journey for several months? Because of this, you can observe flamingos staying in Sri Lanka for a longer period of time than a migrating bird from the northern hemisphere stays in the southern hemisphere.
