The Sri Lankan sambar 🤩 is a subspecies of the sambar that lives in India and Sri Lanka. This subspecies is one of the largest sambar subspecies, with the largest antlers both in size and in body proportions. Large males weight up to 270–280 kg. Sambar live in both lowland dry forests and mountain forests. Large herds of sambar roam the Horton Plains National Park, where it is the most common large mammal.

📍 Polonnaruwa

The Sri Lanka Tiraka Buddha Temple was first built by Poro Rama Maha and later renovated by Vijayabahu V. It is a 12th century building.

1. Architectural details The walls of this huge Buddhist temple Gedige are 17 meters high, 52 meters deep and 18 meters wide. But the roof has collapsed. Entering the hall, there is a huge headless standing Buddha on a side corridor similar to the church architectural style. In addition, relief works are decorated on the outer wall of the Buddhist temple, showing the typical architectural style of the early Polonnaruwa period. Standing next to the stone steps at the entrance, you will be shocked by the height of the Buddhist temple, as if it is straight into the sky.

2. Meditation Road There is a dark road called Meditation Road behind the Buddha statue. It is said that one of the daily lessons of the monks was to walk on this road for meditation, three times a day. .

📍 18 Bend Road

18 Bend Road, also known as ‘Daha Ata Wanguwa’, is situated along the Kandy-Mahiyangana-Padiyatalawa Highway in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The road is popular as a very challenging drive even for the most experienced drivers. Many feared this route due to these bends, but it was the only route connecting these areas together. Although the name says ’18 bend’ in reality the road only has 17 bends because one bend was removed long time back when the road was expanded. It is known as one of the most dangerous roads in Sri Lanka and has become very popular among tourists. Many children and adults have a habit of counting these bends while travelling along this route and stopping over at the top of the mountain to gaze down at the beautiful valley of Mahiyangana.

When you see Sri Lankan sambar dancing around, they aren’t communicating a secret message via scent marking and foot stamping, but simply playing in the rain! Prancing around the hills – a fun dance number of antlers, hooves, and legs – these dancing queens and kings are the most frequent sightings of wildlife at Horton Plains National Park.

Lesser-known Facts�
When sparring (a dance battle!) with rival males, sambar lock antlers and push, like other deer, but uniquely, they also sometimes stand on their hind legs and clash downward into each other. Females also fight on their hind legs and use their forelegs to hit each other on the head as a grand finale!

The lagoon is fed by a number of small rivers and a canal. It is linked to the sea by a narrow channel to the north, near Negombo city. It is surrounded by a densely populated region containing rice paddies, coconut plantations and grassland. The land is used for fishing and agriculture. The lagoon has extensive mangrove swamps and attracts a wide variety of water birds including cormorants, herons, egrets, gulls, terns and other waders. Negombo, Katunayake, Seeduwa are some nearby towns. Lagoon fishing is popular among the fishing community in Negombo. Lagoon crabs and lagoon prawns are in high taste and demand.

Abhayagiri Vihāra was a major monastery site of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism that was situated in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is one of the most extensive ruins in the world and one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage cities in the nation. Historically it was a great monastic centre as well as a royal capital, with magnificent monasteries rising to many stories, roofed with gilt bronze or tiles of burnt clay glazed in brilliant colours. To the north of the city, encircled by great walls and containing elaborate bathing ponds, carved balustrades and moonstones, stood "Abhayagiri", one of seventeen such religious units in Anuradhapura and the largest of its five major viharas. One of the focal points of the complex is an ancient stupa, the Abhayagiri Dagaba. Surrounding the hu**ed dagaba, Abhayagiri Vihara was a seat of the Northern Monastery, or Uttara Vihara and the original custodian of the Tooth relic in the island.

In 1978 the orphanage was taken over by the National Zoological Gardens from the Department of Wildlife. A captive breeding program was launched in 1982. Since the inception of the program over 20 elephants have been bred here. The aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers.

Things to do in Pinnawala
Each animal is also given around 76 kg of green matter a day and around 2 kg from a food bag containing rice bran and maize. The orphanage which boasts to have the largest herd of captive elephants in the world is very popular and visited daily by many Sri Lankan and foreign tourists. The main attraction is clearly to observe the elephants bathing which is quite a spectacle.

In Kalpitiya there are two distinct kite seasons – the summer season which runs from May to October and the winter season from mid-December to mid-March. The Galle Lighthouse (also known as the Pointe de Galle Light) is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, dating back to the mid-19th century and situated within the walls of the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The original Galle Lighthouse was established by the British in 1848 and was the first onshore lighthouse in the area, standing at 24.5 metres tall with a full view of the Galle Harbour. In 1934, a devastating fire destroyed the old lighthouse. This led to the construction of the current lighthouse in 1939, which stands taller than the original at 26.5 metres high and around 100 metres away from the site of its predecessor.
