The Kutubiyya Mosque is one of the most famous Islamic monuments in Morocco. It was built by the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min ibn Ali in the second half of the 12th century on the site of an old palace. The mosque underwent several renovations over time and collected the imprints of many different civilizations in its walls, architecture, inscriptions, and decorations, making it a witness to the country's history. Currently, the Kutubiyya Mosque is an Islamic landmark located in the heart of Marrakesh near the famous Jemaa el-Fna square. It is one of the most important mosques in Morocco and was named after the activity that used to take place in the nearby square, where calligraphers or kutubiyyin, as they are called in Morocco, used to gather to sell books and practice their craft. The mosque was of particular importance, as it served as a popular mobilization headquarters for the caliphs and princes who ruled Morocco, where the sultans' decisions were announced and the biggest events that changed the course of civilizations took place. The construction of the Kutubiyya Mosque began immediately after the conquest of Marrakesh in 1147. The Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min ibn Ali ordered the construction of a great mosque on the ruins of the Almoravid stone palace. It took several years to build the mosque and decorate its magnificent minaret, which was not completed until the reign of Abd al-Mu'min ibn Ali's grandson, the famous Caliph Ya'qub al-Mansur. Most historians praised the mosque, considering it an exceptional mosque that had no parallel in the western Islamic world. The mosque was known for its architecture and grandeur, and it was a model to be emulated in Islamic architecture in North Africa. Several archaeological studies were conducted on its buildings and architectural components, which praised its architectural style. The architectural design of the minaret was greatly influenced by Andalusian art, which is distinguished by its Islamic-style decoration.
