Meet the Von der Decken's sifaka, also known as Decken’s sifaka, a striking lemur endemic to western Madagascar seen here at Namoroka Tsingy Camp. These agile primates are incredible jumpers, easily leaping between trees and sharp-edged limestone tsingy. Renowned for their resilience and adaptability, Decken’s sifakas often live in environments that are inhospitable to any other primates but themselves. Their large, lanky limbs are packed with muscle. Long, padded fingers and toes protect them from injury as they traverse the forest and the sharp rock ledges of the tsingy landscape. Hook-shaped hands and opposable big toes help them to grasp tree trunks firmly. Decken’s sifakas are matriarchal and live in groups of 3 – 10 individuals. These sifakas play a vital role in their ecosystem, aiding in seed dispersal and maintaining forest health.

The Madagascar pitcher plant (Nepenthes madagascariensis) is a fascinating carnivorous plant endemic to Madagascar. Known for its unique pitcher-shaped leaves, it attracts and traps insects to supplement its nutrient intake. The plant thrives in the island's tropical climate, typically found in sandy coastal areas and swampy habitats. Its pitchers are vibrant, often green with red or purple hues, and can grow up to 25 centimeters. Inside, a slippery surface and digestive fluids help break down prey, providing essential nutrients like nitrogen. This adaptation allows the Madagascar pitcher plant to survive in nutrient-poor soils, showcasing nature's remarkable ingenuity.

🦎🌿 Madagascar Chameleons: Nature's Master of Disguise 🌿🦎

Did you know that Madagascar is home to over half of the world's chameleon species? These fascinating creatures are renowned for their remarkable ability to change color, which they use for communication, camouflage, and thermoregulation.

From the tiny Brookesia micra, one of the smallest reptiles in the world, to the vibrant Panther Chameleon, with its stunning hues of red, green, and blue, Madagascar boasts an incredible diversity of chameleons.

Their unique characteristics extend beyond their color-changing abilities. With independently mobile eyes, fused toes that form grasping claws, and long, sticky tongues that can shoot out at incredible speeds to capture prey, chameleons are truly marvels of evolution.

However, many species of Madagascar chameleons are threatened by habitat loss, illegal pet trade, and climate change. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the survival of these captivating creatures and the preservation of Madagascar's rich biodiversity.

Let's celebrate the wonder of Madagascar's chameleons and work together to protect their natural habitats! 🌿💚

UNESCO has just extended the World Heritage Site of Tsingy de Bemaraha to also include the Ankarana Special Reserve, Tsimanampetsotse National Park and 3 other dry forest areas. The Dry Forests of Andrefana is a serial extension of the Tsingy de Bemaraha World Heritage property and consists of five protected areas. The new component parts cover almost the full range of ecological and evolutionary variation within the western forests of Madagascar from north to south, including western dry forests and southwestern spiny forest-thicket. These additional sites are of extreme importance for conservation as they cover a spectacular array of endemic and threatened biodiversity, including baobabs, flame trees (Delonix), as well as unique evolutionary lineages such as the Mesitornithiformes, an order of birds which is 54 million years old.

Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve comprises karstic landscapes and limestone uplands cut into impressive 'tsingy' peaks and a 'forest' of limestone ne...

Madagascar is home to 5% of the world's biodiversity and new species are being described every year. Many of these species are discovered thanks to DNA analysis. Uroplatus garamaso, the newest gecko in Madagascar, is found in the forests of the north, Amber Mountain, Ankarana and Montagne des Français.

The leaf-tailed geckos of the genus Uroplatus aren’t easy to find. In the jungles of their native Madagascar, this is certainly true, owing to their remarkable ability to meld into their surroundings. But scientists are still uncovering species from the island nation with astonishing regularity by...
