Terelj is one of Mongolia’s national parks, 55 km northeast from Ulaanbaatar city. Although it is very close to the capital the park has fresh and clean air. Unlike the nearby steppes, it has mountains and trees, including large stands of tamaracks that turn golden in the fall. The park has a magnificent alpine landscape, many rock formations for rock climbers, and includes a famous formation named Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad).
Turtle Rock, (Melkhii Khad), is a surprising granitic formation, 24 meters (79 feet) high, whose form reminds of a turtle. Its old name was Mungut Khad (Treasure rock). The legend states that King Galdanboshigt hid all his treasures during the war with Manchu Troops in 1600. Since then it’s worshiped by the locals as the treasure rock bringing wealth to those who visit.
The rock is also well known as gigantesque rock made and carved into a turtle by only wind and rainwater. Many people have called it «the Switzerland of Mongolia»; it is an excellent place for horse or camel riding, hiking inside the rock and nearby.

Traditional meals in Naadam festival
Khuushuur is a meat pastry or dumpling popular in Mongolia that is relatively similar to Russian and other cuisines like chiburreki or Garlic chives wrap. The meat, either beef or mutton, is ground up and mixed with onion (or garlic), salt and other spices. The cook rolls the dough into circles, then places the meat inside the dough and folds the dough in half, creating a flat half-circular pocket. The cook then closes the pockets by pressing the edges together. A variety of Khuushuur has a round shape produced by pressing the dough and mince together using the dough roller.
After making the pockets, the cook fries them in oil until the dough turns a golden brown. The Khuushuur is then served hot and can be eaten by hand.
This type of Mongolian cuisine is similar to buuz in that the meat is prepared in the same way and cooked in a dough pocket, the principal difference being that buuz is steamed instead of fried.
Khorhog is a dish that only exists in Mongolia. Khorkhog is made by cooking pieces of meat inside a container which also contains hot stones and water and is often also heated from the outside.
To make khorkhog, Mongolians take a lamb (goat meat can be substituted) and cut it into pieces of appropriate size while leaving the bones attached. The cook then places ten to twenty fist-sized stones over a fire. When the stones are hot enough, the rocks and the meat are placed in the chosen cooking container. Metal milk jugs are a traditional and typical choice, although any container sturdy enough to hold the hot rocks will serve.
The heat of the stones and the steam will cook the meat inside the jug. The cook can also put the jug on fire or the stove if the stones are not hot enough. The stones will turn black from the heat and the fat they absorb from the lamb. The jug remains covered while the cook listens to and smells the meal to judge when it is ready. The stones can take up to an hour and a half to cook the meat sufficiently. When the dish is ready, the cook hands out portions of meat along with the hot stones which are tossed from hand to hand and are said to have beneficial properties. Diners usually eat khorkhog with their fingers, although knives may be used to slice the meat off the bone.
Khorkhog is a popular dish in Mongolian cuisine, but it is generally not served in restaurants.

Mongolian Horse Racing
Home of the world’s longest and (toughest) horse race - “Mongol derby”, which is officially claimed in the World Guinness Records.
In Mongolia, most people learn to ride horses when they are like 5. Mongolian horses are relatively stubby but strong as they are trained at a young age and used for transportation, sustenance, companionship, and racing.

Mongolians enjoy horse racing throughout the year. However, the most extended and exciting one happens during the Naadam Festival. During the festival, participating horses are divided into six categories based on their ages. The distance of the race varies in each category: two-year-old horses race for 10-12 km (6-7,5 miles), for instance, stallions race for 23 km (14,5 miles) on average, and seven-year-old one's race for 25-26 km (15,5-16 miles). Moreover, though, the distance varies from race to race depending on the surface of the race field in different locations.

Horse jockeys are usually between 5 and 13. Due to the long distance of the horseracing, jockeys are preferred to be light, yet experienced. During the race, jockeys not only ride horses, but also they are responsible for cherishing their horses with a special song called “giingo” and raising their spirits.

With no doubt, several months before the race, both horses and jockeys go through intense training. Especially the horses are given a special diet and treated with tenderness during the said period. In the race, horses and their jockeys coming in first five are rewarded and revered. Like the winning wrestlers, winning horses are given titles like “tymnii eh” or the leader of ten thousand. Horse trainers, whose horses perform exceptional in consecutive races, are also given special honors like “Leading trainer”, or “National famous trainer”.

During the Naadam Festival, from 11th to 15th of July, around 180,000 horses race throughout the country (in 21 provinces and 329 soums)
