LIFE AT THE BEACH .....
Living at the beach isn't just about flip flops, sandy toes and margaritas. There is a whole lot more!

We talked about getting around the area now let's touch on the housing market. The beach area is incredible and at this time still very affordable. In the past twelve years we have seen properties off the beach triple and the on beach at times quadruple in price.
That being said, there are still many affordable options.

Let's start off with renting. If you're planning on just spending a few weeks a year at the beach, renting may be your best bet. Rentals are in abundance, between local companies and online venues like Air B & B and other you can find most anything and in all price ranges.

What to look for ... things are a must may not always the norm here in Mexico. So before you rent ask a lot of questions.

Ask if the house has air conditioning and in which rooms. How often are the units cleaned and serviced? A dirty air conditioner can be hazardous to with respiratory issues.

Another thing to ask if you are paying the electric in addition to the rent is if the home in in the DAC, the highest rate tier. The cost difference can be enormous.

Ask if the house has hot water at all outlets and if it has gravity fed or a pressurized system. In an improperly serviced or incorrectly plumbed home a gravity fed system could mean a tricked from the shower head. If you have long hair you know how frustrating that can be.

Ask if the house has a toilet paper friendly septic system. If not you will be placing your waste paper in a trash can in the bathroom. This .... for me .... is a deal breaker. I know a lot of people will say this is Mexico. The truth is you can find a lit of homes with toilet paper friendly septic systems. Enough said on this subject ....

You'll be traveling with tablets, computers and cell phones. Ask about the internet service and the speed. Also ask if a surge protector is supplied to protect your expensive devices.
Power surges, even thought better than they once were are still a problem here at the beach.

If you are bringing your own Firestick or using your Netflix account, make sure the internet speed is good enough to use your devices.

If you need to work during your vacation, be sure you have a backup plan, data on your phone of another internet service option. Nothing here is 100% reliable.

Last but no least is security. Is the property walled, does it have an alarm system ... a safe? Most crimes here are crimes of opportunity. Merida and the surrounds is one of the safest cities in the world. As you would at your own home in the states or Canada, be aware of your surroundings and always take precautions to protect your valuables.

Once settled in, enjoy the local markets and restaurants here at the beach, you have so many options including food delivery. Day trips to the cenotes, haciendas and ruins or a chartered fishing trips on the Ria, you will never run out of fun things to do.

Top on your list .... take time to explore the magical city White City ... Merida! From the sidewalk cafes to the amazing restaurants Merida is amazing. Everything at your fingertips, the large Centro Mercado is filled with hand crafted items, clothing and food products. It's a great place to find those quirky souvenirs and treasured keepsakes.

There is one thing you should not miss, it's Merida at night! The lights ... the sounds ... the aromas of the food in the air. Paseo de Montejo is the main street coming into the city, take the time to walk the entire street. Stop for dinner or a drink. Visit the shops along the way. If you're too tired to walk back to your starting point, flag down a carriage ride to take you back to your car. I'll bet after a little rest you will take the carriage back to where you started and finish your walk. Paseo de Montejo is one of favorite places of all time.
I have never felt as safe in any other large city in the world as I do in Merida. I have walked in Centro at midnight, heard voices behind me and never looked over my shoulder. I'm not sure that would be the case in many cities today north of the border.
Beach life is more than just living at the beach, it's enjoying the beach and everything that surrounds it!
Next time ... buying the perfect beach house.
