TWO ADVENTURE

Cenotes are unique to the Yucatan Peninsula. Millions of years ago the land of the peninsula was a coral reef. Over the course of time it underwent great transformation creating magical cenotes, fresh water springs and rivers beneath the surface of the whole peninsula.
The word cenote means ‘a hole with water.’ Because the soil of the Yucatan Peninsula is largely limestone, over time it is dissolved by rain and forms underground rivers. In many places they are completely hidden from sight; in others the ground above has collapsed to form a cenote in the underground river.
According to legends, cenotes are the door to the Underworld. The Mayans used to created sanctuaries there, where they and they held rituals and ceremonies. This adds to the mystique of these astonishing places. They are also a great place for a refreshing swim in incredible surroundings and a great venue for unbelievably beautiful underwater photos.
