Taking meat into Botswana and Namibia
We receive regular questions about taking meat and other fresh produce into Botswana and Namibia from South Africa. Due to the FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) outbreak in Limpopo, no meat may cross the border from South Africa to Namibia or Botswana. This regulation includes biltong, animal hides, dairy products and eggs. At some of the border posts you might even find they confiscate fruit and vegetables. This means that canned products and UHT products are the best option until this ban is lifted.

LÜDERITZ NAME CHANGE MAY GO TO COURT

The proposed new name of the Namibian coastal town of Lüderitz may be heading to court.

Many residents are afraid the name change may negatively influence the number of tourists visiting the town - tourism being one of the town’s biggest resources. The proposal of changing the name from Lüderitz to !Nami was already proposed in 2013.

!Nami is a Nama term for “being embraced by water" and was proposed by the !Aman clan. The biggest problem with the name is that very few people know how to pronounce it.

Some of the Lüderitz residents opposed to the name change have created a legal fund and want to raise N$100 000 to enable them to pay legal fees that could accrue from their planned court action.

"Sands of Time"
By Robert Postma

It is a surreal feeling walking in the abandoned buildings of Kolmanskop, Namibia. The town was forgotten in 1956 and since then the desert has begun to reclaim it. Some rooms have sand up to the roof and it is impossible to get into them. A hauntingly beautiful place.

A strike by employees of the Protea Hotel Seaview Zum Sperrgebiet in Lüderitz that started on 17 September has resulted in the temporary closure of the hotel. Besides a demand of an increase in their basic salary, workers also demands a bigger housing, medical and transport allowance. Meanwhile, the Protea Hotel chain’s Pelican Bay Hotel in Walvis Bay also averted a possible strike earlier this month after management quickly signed an agreement to increase employee salaries after demands for better wages.
