As we celebrate International Women's Day today, our gratitude and focus is on this young author, Munirat Sh*tta Bey, who donated several copies of her book to our library. Munirat started writing at age 5.
Her kind and benevolent nature can be likened to that of her forebears, Mohammed Sh*tta Bey. Also called Olowo Pupa. A celebrated businessman, philanthropist, and influential Nigerian born in Sierra Leone and lived in Lagos in the mid 19th century. He built the famous Sh*tta Bey mosque in Lagos in 1894.

Thank you to our guests and
The image on the screen in the background is that of the highly revered Eyo Okolaba or Eyo Alakete Pupa or Eyo Oba. Okolaba ekun ( ekun meaning Tiger or leopard) is the 2nd most revered eyo group in the hierarchy of the Eyo orishas in the Adamu orisha Festival also knows as the Eyo Festival which is the most important cultural festival in Lagos.

It is performed to honour a late king, chief, or anyone the king, i.e., Oba of Lagos, approves with the consent of the state government that usually funds it. Okolaba is only second to Adimu, the exclusive cultural custodian of this festival .
One of the highlights of the festival is when these two groups meet in the morning and exchange greetings in isale eko. It's truly a sight to Behold. You will not find such pictures or images on social media as its prohibited to take pictures of these two groups when the orishas are out in public but it's worth adding to your bucket list to attend and see physically during the festival.

Fortunately, lovinglagos is in the process of developing a viewing/ cultural centre in that neighbourhood, so maybe it will be ready before the next festival.
