DELVA Landscape Architecture Urbanism

DELVA Landscape Architecture Urbanism We create radical landscapes for people, nature and economy. We are DELVA. DELVA is a leading office for landscape design and urban planning.
(11)

We are convinced of the power of our craft: working with the systematics of nature to tackle the major challenges of the future. That is why we turn the design process upside down and take the landscape as our basis. We use spatial development as a means of densification, greening and sustainability. Starting from the essence of the place, we create meaningful landscapes and spatial experiences, f

rom sketch to realization. By taking a position and cooperating integrally with all partners in the design process, we connect the landscape intrinsically with buildings, technology, policy and financial viability. DELVA is located in the heart of Amsterdam and is led by founding partner Steven Delva and partner Emiel Swinnen. They are supported by Rogier Hendriks (concept and design), Sander van den Bosch (engineering and implementation) and Jeroen Jacobs (planting specialist). Since our foundation, we have grown into a dynamic and solid team of 25 landscape architects, urban designers, architects and cultural technicians. Over the years, we have built up a broad portfolio, with a rich diversity of locations, scale levels, phases and typologies. We have won multiple awards and are very proud to have been announced Architect of the Year.

DOMAIN BY THE DOMMEL | SINT-MICHIELSGESTEL

In Sint-Michielsgestel, the Kentalis estate is evolving into a residential area. The project invites the community to explore and enjoy the outdoor areas, intertwining themes such as water management, natural beauty, and heritage.

The restoration of the estate’s iconic main building will serve as the vibrant heart of the community, seamlessly blending the past with the present and providing space for social interaction and activities.

URBAN FOREST AT HEIGHT | AMSTERDAM

The Pulse welcomes the first urban forest at height in Amsterdam.
Need to unwind in the bustling Zuidas? That will soon be possible in the new urban forest on the tenth floor of ‘’The Pulse of Amsterdam‘’.

This week we are already planting the trees at a height of no less than 35 metres.

Green is the new gold! Green reduces heat, provides for climate adaptation and, at this scale, creates a significant contribution to biodiversity within this highly urbanised area.

‘’What is unique about The Pulse is that we present greenery in a powerful and future-proof way. No trays on pots but a vast continuous landscape of trees nestled between two towers. Only in this way do we create great impact for people and animals. This on a neighbourhood and city scale‘’.  Steven Delva

A meeting place for people and animals, right on the Zuidas. It reduces heat, retains water and increases biodiversity. But this public function simply provides: happiness of life. The building envelope is circular, The Pulse of Amsterdam will receive BREEAM Outstanding certification upon completion and aims to achieve WELL Platinum certification. Ambitions for sustainability and liveability is set on: ‘exceeding everything’.

SILT | MIDDELKERKE

The new landscape icon SILT in Middelkerke is both captivating and sincere, offering a significant asset to the Flemish coast. With a profound appreciation for the sea and dunes, this landmark seamlessly integrates coastal reinforcement, landscape enhancement, livability, and sustainability.

The designers have anchored the building to the site by integrating it into a new experiential landscape, inspired by the former island of Testerep, characterized by dunes (coastal defense) and tidal channels (prosperity). The fusion of the building into the landscape ensures that coastal reinforcement, livability, and sustainability harmonize with the existing coastline. In the heart of the landscape, the hotel tower manifests itself as a new beacon by the sea. SILT also houses a casino, a restaurant, a multifunctional event space, and an underground parking garage.

Reinald Top, partner and architect at ZJA: “The design rewrites the historical relationship between the seaside resort and the sea, and with its modest hotel tower, it adds a lot of new public space to the location while having a relatively small footprint. At the same time, the hotel tower is an eye-catching building, with its striking shape and external wooden structure. SILT is unassuming while having maximum impact and is visible from along the entire historical coastline of the former island of Testerep, from Ostend to Westende. The catalyst for a new vibrant centre of Middelkerke.”

Steven Delva: “Skyscrapers define the skyline of a modern of a modern city. For SILT, the design team sought a ‘landscraper’: a new, unique horizontal dune landscape with a program inside. We use this typical landscape as a means to integrate all the challenges in a seemingly natural way. It results in a new experiential dune landscape. A landscape where residents and visitors can once again enjoy the view, the sea, the skies, and the dunes.”

FROM MARBLE TO GREEN
..that was the recent headline in Het Financieele Dagblad about DELVA’s projects on the Zuidas in Amsterdam.

Now it also becomes visible. The progressive concepts about how nature-inclusive construction is actually possible are now also being realised. The Pulse project is the first to emerge. The many trees that will soon form the micro-forest at a height of 42 meters are already on their way.

You can now listen to how DELVA, together with VORM Holding and EDGE Technologies, makes the impossible possible in the podcast VORM & Inhoud (in Dutch) via link in bio. Follow our socials so you don’t miss the spectacular planting of greenery.

COMMON WOODS | AMERSFOORT

A new habitat for humans and animals that expands into the surrounding natural environment.

The management of the greenery in Common Woods, both in the gardens and in the public spaces, will be done by residents. Residents will adhere to a pre-established nature plan and DELVA will help determine what can be planted in their own gardens. Maintenance and financing will be arranged collectively from the VVE under the direction of DELVA.

COMMON WOODS | AMERSFOORT

“An abundance of greenery, who will pay for it is still too often the question. Common Woods is taking steps in a new sustainable direction.”

In Amersfoort, the new, fully nature-inclusive neighbourhood will soon be completed. Nature-inclusive neighbourhoods are an important means to achieve a CO2 neutral and climate resilient municipality with rich biodiversity. In addition to being the urban designer, DELVA was also the landscape architect and created the plan for the outdoor space in the new district. A balanced ecosystem is central there, which stimulates biodiversity. A plan with only native plants and where the soil is permeable as much as possible.

COMMON WOODS | AMERSFOORT

A new definition of what it means for people to live in harmony with nature.

Firmly embedded in the historic Nimmerdor forest in Amersfoort, Common Woods redefines the meaning of good living. From a large horse farm (with a lot of CO2 emissions and no nature) to a nature-inclusive neighbourhood that absorbs more CO2 than it emits. A socially inclusive neighbourhood with 56 circular homes that transforms an ugly polluting space into a place of life for all. Welcome to Common Woods.

ONDER CONSTRUCTIE: THE PULSE - AMSTERDAM

WLA AWARD for GEESTWATER | LISSE

Double honours for our team‭! ‬Not only SILT | Middelkerke‭, ‬but also Geestwater | Lisse wins an internationally renowned WLA award‭. ‬

In Lisse‭, ‬DELVA used the initial housing shortage to immediately answer other social issues‭, ‬such as water storage and nature development‭.‬‭ ‬

"In an increasingly complex world, it is no longer enough just to look at housing needs," believes Steven Delva. "We need to solve additional urgent needs with even less space. That is exactly what we are doing by pursuing integrated and nature-based solutions. The project in Lisse is a perfect example of this: it provided the investor with more housing; it provided less paving, reduced construction costs; the government achieved its water objectives; and a nature organisation became the manager of the landscape."

"This proves that as long as there is integral thinking and cooperation, it is perfectly possible to start from an economic standpoint while at the same time also addressing many other social needs. That is why we are convinced of the power of our profession, we effectively address the spatial challenges of the 21st century. In each case, we turn the design process completely upside down and take the landscape as the basis of planning."
