Always wanted to know more about foraging? Together with the very experienced forager Wies Teepe, I will take you through one theory session and three field excursions during which you will learn the basic foraging rules and how to identify the most common edible wild plants found in and near Amsterdam. Please check out my website or www.etenuitdenatuur.nl for more information, or send an e-mail to [email protected]
Limited places available (max 20) so sign up soon!

Besides recognizing edible wild plants by their key characters you will learn which plant parts you can use through the seasons and how to prepare them.

Taking a peek under the 'skirts' of a snowdrop one will discover how this flower lures insects into fertilising it: the stripes, appropriately called nectar guides, lead them to the centre, where a nectar reward awaits. Fascinatingly, these marks and the entire flower are seen by an insect in a totally different way. Bees, for instance, are particularly sensitive to ultraviolet light, which our eyes cannot detect. Many flowers take advantage of this sensitivity by reflecting or absorbing UV light in order to attract them.
If you would like to see how a snowdrop looks under UV light take a look at these photographs. You will be amazed!

Alvast bedankt!

A new study projects that by 2050, climate change could reduce the amount of ground usable to grow coffee in Latin America by up to 88 percent. Bees play a key role in increasing coffee yields.

Spring is definitely here! I watched a couple of long-tailed t**s flying back and forth to their nest carrying moss. They build a strong but flexible nest using moss and spider silk. March 10 2017, Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam.

I watched this black-headed gull harassing mallards and coots: she would hang around near them while they foraged for food under water and then she would try and snap it out of their bills! She would then move away and return a few minutes later to repeat her number. Photograph taken on the 11th of January 2017 at the Vondelpark.

Now the trees are stripped from their leaves it is easier to spot birds. Here we see a robin with a thick down coat which allows him to withstand winter temperatures without losing too much of its body warmth. Photograph taken on the 14th of January 2017 at the Amsterdamse bos.
