- Open Garden Days 🪴 : a great opportunity to discover the secrets hidden behind closed doors of Amsterdam. Please be aware that this activity is prohibited for strollers, dogs and prams and is not accessible with a wheelchair as you go through people’s houses and have to use stairs.

- Holland Festival 🇳🇱 : their 77th edition will provide a mixture of performances, music, dance all together along the month of June. An artistic month that gives you the possibility to see 22 locations in Amsterdam.

The color orange refers to the family name of the Dutch Royal Family, the House of Orange-Nassau. In 1572, their ancestor, Willem van Oranje, organized the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule, which led to an independent Dutch state after the Eighty Years' War. As a result, the color orange ("oranje" in Dutch) has come to symbolize the country and to signify the national pride.

Café In 't Aepjen (the Moneky bar) is famous not only because it is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam( dating from 1475) but also because it's curiously decorated with monkeys and the history behind it. In the 16th- century, the monkey bar was a hostel for sailors. When sailors returned to Amsterdam, they did not have much money, so they offered exotic pets, monkeys, for their bills. These cute monkeys were, of course, full of fleas. The assumption was that someone who scratched his head back then had probably spent the night at the monkey bar. A famous Dutch expression comes from these: "je bent in de aap gelogeerd" (you spent the night with the monkey?), meaning someone is in trouble.

Unfortunately, they no longer accept monkeys nowadays🙊,so when you visit you have to pay with euros.

During the Dutch Golden Age (during the early to mid-1500s) there has been a phenomenon called "TULIP MANIA": prices for some bulbs of the recently introduced tulips reached extraordinary high prices, becoming more expensive than houses.
The best of tulips were valued upwards $1 million in today's money!🤑

🔸Do you know the meaning behind these ### on the Amsterdam flag?🔸

❌Differently from what you may think, they do not represent neither the Red Light district warnings (s*x, drugs and chaos) nor the three famous Dutch foods (fries, cheese and pancakes).

🔶A _famous theory_ is that the three crosses on Amsterdam’s flag represent *the three dangers* of Old Amsterdam: fire, floods and the Black Death, and that they were meant to ward off these dangers.
However, this popular legend has no historical basis.

Other theories are the following ones:

🔶 *The St. Andrew’s connection*
The three crosses on Amsterdam’s coats of arms are St. Andrew’s crosses . St. Andrew was a fisherman and an apostle, who is said to have been martyred on a cross called a crux decussata (X-shaped cross). Amsterdam's ### symbol can be dated back to 1505. Back then, the city was a fishermen's town and this flag was flown on all of Amsterdam's ships.

🔶 *The Persijn family connection*
Most historians believe that the Amsterdam coat of arms and its crosses can be linked to the noble Persijn family, who once owned a lot of land in and around Amsterdam.
The knight Jan Persijn was "lord" of Amsterdam from 1280 to 1282.
