Mustang is one of Nepal's most mysterious and least known kingdoms. It is also known as "Tibet outside the Tibetan Border" for it survived the Chinese invasion of 1951 and remains as the last enclave of pristine Tibetan culture. Also, Mustang was a forbidden kingdom into which no foreigner was allowed to enter. Although Mustang belongs now politically to Nepal, its people still respect their local king and preserve their traditional lifestyle. A road that links the Tibetan Plateau via Nepal to the tropical Indian plains is still under construction creating a corridor from Lhasa to Kathmandu.

Geographically Mustang is dominated by eroded sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces which together present a colorful mixture made up principally of earthen reds, browns and yellows. Therefore it is often compared to the surface of the moon.

The people migrated from Tibet centuries ago in Mustang and become to Bhotias and Loba communities. They practice Sakyapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monasteries and house have a medieval look and show the unique local architecture. Mostly, they are built with sun baked mud bricks and stones. People form Mustang mostly grows barley, buck wheat and potatoes. The capital called Lo Manthang is a walled complex with the houses of local nobilities and monasteries. In 2007, invaluable objects of cultural and historical importance were discovered in Upper Mustang caves. In high caves requiring technical climbing skills one can discover beautiful Buddhist murals, and historical objects, dating back to, according to them, around 800 years ago.

Hidden behind the majestic Himalayan ranges of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, Mustang is filled with beautiful trekking zones with spectacular mountain scenery. You will be surrounded by more than 35 mountains over 6000m with high elevation of the trails rise from 2815m to 3780m above sea level. It is a relatively easy trekking along the permitted route to Lo-Manthang, which lies in the very heart of Mustang. Special Trekking area and Permits are required by trekkers when they visit this region with government registered trekking company of Nepal. As per Nepal government rules and regulations a minimum of 2 persons are required to trek in Mustang.
